Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi dominated football for 15 years.

In that time, their unparalleled success turned the former rivals into global brands. Sponsorship deals and mammoth wages took the pair from humble beginnings and propelled them into enormous wealth.

But despite all they accomplished in the game, the two legends’ net worths are still dwarfed by that of an obscure Danish dressage rider by the name of Anna Kasprzak.

Kasprzak represented Denmark at the 2012 and 2016 Summer Olympic Games, narrowly missing out on a bronze medal in London when she finished fourth in the team competition.

The 33-year-old is relatively unknown outside of dressage, but happens to be one of the richest sportspeople on the planet. Her eye-watering $1billion estimated net worth is not owed to her sporting success, however.

Kasprzak, along with her brother Andre and mother Hanni, owns popular Danish shoe manufacturer, ECCO, which has helped her rake in mind-boggling figures. According to the firm's website, she is a member of the supervisory board.

ECCO's products are sold in 90 countries worldwide from more than 2,200 shops, while they also have an online presence. As well as finishing 14th in the individual competition at the Rio Olympics, Kasprzak also operates a private dressage barn in Haderslev, Denmark.

All of that means the equestrian is worth more than both Messi and Ronaldo put together.

The Argentine, 35, can take solace in knowing he is at least wealthier than his Portuguese counterpart.

Messi, who lifted the World Cup in December, is worth around $600million (£480m) as of 2023, while Ronaldo’s is estimated to be closer to the £400m mark.

According to Forbes, Messi takes home £95.5m-a-year thanks to his Paris Saint-Germain contract and endorsements. The Argentine superstar has a branded shop in the Catalan capital and also has his own clothing line as well as a lifelong deal with Adidas.

Meanwhile, the 38-year-old Ronaldo’s 20-year career has seen him rack up huge sums thanks to his various sponsorships, including a life-time partnership with Nike, plus deals with the likes of Herbalife, Tag Heuer and Clear Haircare.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner enjoyed a huge boost to his earnings when he signed a reported £172m-per-year contract with Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr for two-and-a-half years in January.

It made the Manchester United legend the highest-paid player in the history of the game.

Expect to see Ronaldo’s net worth soar should he decide to see out his contract.
