Arteta dubbed ‘footballing David Brent’ after signing morale-boosting dog for Arsenal

Mikel Arteta has been dubbed 'football's answer to David Brent' after he hired a labrador to boost morale at Arsenal.

The Gunners had been having a season beyond their wildest dreams, but a run of adverse results including a 3-0 thrashing at home by Brighton saw Manchester City leapfrog Arteta's side. And with City all but certain to win their third title in three years this weekend after Arsenal leading for most of the season, Arteta has taken drastic measures to improve morale.

According to The Times, Arteta has named the pooch "Win" as he tries more strange tactics to get the Gunners rolling. And football fans have joked Arteta is The Office UK character, David Brent.

One fan tweeted: "Arteta is the footballing David Brent!"

"Full Ted Lasso vibes and I'm here for it," a second added, comparing Arteta to Ted Lasso – a go-lucky coach from a series under the same name. However, a third responded pointing out what happened to the club dog in Ted Lasso – and it wasn't good.

"The players should take turns taking her home for a week like a class pet," a fourth joked. While a fifth added: "Someone said it’s gonna help the players learn how to hold onto a lead!"

Arteta has taken bizarre measures for marginal gains in the past; he infamously pumped "You'll Never Walk Alone" through speakers around Arsenal's training pitch in a bid to prepare for the atmosphere away at Anfield, only to be routed 4-0 by Jurgen Klopp's Reds.

“I think we were all a little bit shocked when he put the music on,” new Martin Odegaard said. “It just shows the way he is, he wants to prepare the team in the best possible way and he’s very creative. It was a nice and fun way to prepare for that atmosphere."

Arteta has also had his side playing dodgeball in training, among other activities such as taking a replica of the old Highbury Clock away with them to pose with in their dressing room after a 3-0 victory at Fulham.
