“Harry Is Nowhere Near A Good Enough Actor To Be A Scene Partner With Florence Pugh” – 22 Films People Think Could Have Been Superb But Ended Up Being Awful

Not all movies are great, but there are some out there that really could have been if it wasn’t for a few certain things that they missed the mark on.

Amazon Prime Video

So, we recently asked the BuzzFeed Community for the films they think could have been great, but weren’t executed right, and here are some of the best responses:

1. Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures”The persity of characters was good, but the ageist trope of killing off older characters to make way for young ones was disappointing. I’d have liked to see more advancement of Finn’s character. Also, Luke didn’t seem true to character, too many scenes of fishing and being grumpy wasted a good location too. It just could have been better.”

2. Silent Hill

Metropolitan Filmexport

“The first two games are the scariest shit ever, still never managed to finish the second one only because I got too scared to continue lol. Then it became one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen, if they’d just kept the Lynchian vibe it could have been great.”

—gurkanserdig

3. In Time

20th Century Studios

“It had such an interesting premise, but they abandoned it in favour of Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried going on some kind of robbery spree. I wanted to know more about Vincent Kartheiser’s character and the shady people behind the whole system.”

—fayeolivia90

4. The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones

Entertainment One

“They made it when other books in its genre like The Hunger Games were massively successful as a film series, but it just fell flat. They got a great cast, but then they kind of just cherry-picked bits of the book and it just didn’t work. It could have been an amazing film series and it had so much potential, but they just missed the mark and for fans of the book it was seriously disappointing.”

—hannahlm1d

“They got the main ideas down, but they changed things so it was harder to set up the next five books. Obviously, that’s a lot to fit into five movies and the commitment of the actors wasn’t all there for the rest of the movies. I wish the TV show didn’t change so much or that they followed the books for the movies and kept making them.”

—clairemarilee

5. See How They Run

Searchlight Pictures

“It wasn’t a bad film, but it could’ve been great. The cast was top-notch, the style was classic murder mystery and the premise was interesting, it just never quite managed to live up to its potential.”

—eidothea

6. Starship Troopers

TriStar Pictures

“The book was amazing and I was excited to see the movie until I saw it. So many bad changes.”

—jeremyo811

7. Dark Phoenix

20th Century Studios

“Dark Phoenix is an amazing character, they can’t seem to get her right on the screen, just like they initially got Scarlet Witch so wrong. First Class was very good, and I was so hopeful to finally see a good characterization of Dark Phoenix on the big screen. I’m not mad at Sophie, she did what she could. It’s just one of those movies where too many guys with power had input.”

8. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2

Summit Entertainment

“It was awful because of the dream nonsense. I would have kept it as a real thing and not a vision.”

—ianb12267

“The dream stuff was definitely weirdly unnecessary. Makes me wonder if the director just really hated Peter Facinelli.”

—monkeybuttmom

9. The Princess Diaries (one and two)

Buena Vista Pictures Distribution

“I’m a huge fan of the book series, then watched the films… They are completely unrelated! They could’ve made a whole separate film about someone being a secret princess, but don’t take a beloved book series and change almost everything about it. Not a single thing from the second film happens in any of the books!”

—lauraaliily

10. The Hobbit

Warner Bros. Pictures

“I wish they’d stuck closer to the original story, the films were completely different from the book and far too long. They didn’t have to make poor Radagast the nature-loving wizard look like he never washed, the bird’s nest was unnecessary.”

—bookshelftoad

11. Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children

20th Century Studios

“The book series is so good and Tim Burton nailed the aesthetic. But everything else was just so bad. Why change a bunch of the characters’ ages? Why make the ending so you couldn’t make any of the book sequels into movies?”

—rachelc43

12. Don’t Worry Darling

Warner Bros. Pictures

“Personally, I love it, but would I ever recommend it to someone? No. The movie had a great idea, but the overall performance was just meh.”

—lilbusybuzz

“It would have been a lot better if they had a better actor as the male lead. Harry is nowhere near a good enough actor to be a scene partner with Florence Pugh. The big ‘twist’ wasn’t really a twist because he was not at all compelling enough to make me believe he was ever on her side.”

—foragoodtimenotalongtime

13. Percy Jackson & the Lightning Thief

20th Century Fox

“It could have totally been done better. Stick by the book more and hire younger actors and it could have been good or at least better.”

—emarshall12346

14. Eragon

20th Century Fox

“Especially in the wake of how successful other fantasy movies and shows have been. Maybe it would work better as a limited series?”

—markh63

15. Passengers

Sony Pictures Releasing

“It could have been an amazing thriller if they hadn’t focused on the romance. Having Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt’s characters fall in love should have been a small part of the story, switching into a thriller when the twist is revealed. It could have been so much more but no, a mediocre sci-fi romance was the best they could do. Such a waste.”

—sunflowersugar

16. Batman and Robin

Warner Bros.

“First of all, you have George Clooney, who basically a real-life Bruce Wayne. Why not let him do his thing, but also flex some action-hero muscles? There’s a decent story buried in there about family and love, if only…

If the studio had allowed the script to be less toyetic if the pace had been slowed down just a hair, if the actors had been allowed to actually act instead of emote… It could have been so much more than it was.”

—moncynnes

17. Ghost in the Shell

Paramount Pictures

“We were robbed of what had the potential to be excellent based on the source material/the 1995 animated film.”

—allierowling

18. Suicide Squad (2016)

Warner Bros. Pictures

“The two trailers showed that it could have been a super fun movie with a killer cast, but it got completely ruined by weak writing and directing.”

—axj66

19. Jurassic World Dominion

Universal Pictures

“It was just a bug movie. The locusts weren’t even a side plot, they took up the main storyline, which was ridiculous and unneeded! Plus the cast had the THICKEST plot armour available since they survive a plane crash, hypothermia, strangling, dinosaurs, and somehow everyone can just attempt to high-five any dino and they freeze up.”

—senpainoticedu

20. Downsizing

Paramount Pictures

“It’s a great idea and the first half is pretty good, but then it became a completely different film.”

—hex87

21. Valley of the Dolls

20th Century Studios

“It was the first naughty book I read as a child. The original movie has a great cast without any real chemistry, or lousy direction – just a horrible, laughable mess. Patty Duke could have given a memorable, Oscar-worthy performance if the director had a clue – instead, she’s reduced to a grotesque mess.”

—bravesgirl21

22. Tomorrowland

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

“That film could’ve been a masterpiece about hope triumphing over despair as symbolised by a futuristic, utopian society run by a corrupt leader. Instead, we got robot cops and the Eiffel Tower turning into an antiquated rocket ship. What a huge disappointment!”
