14 Times Celebs Were Called Out For Their Unhealthy Food Habits

We all know that diet culture is horribly toxic. But no matter how hard we try, it’s still incredibly pervasive and can cause a lot of damage.

This is especially true for celebrities and people who live in the public eye. Here are a bunch of celebs who were called out for their unhealthy habits around food.

Warning: This post contains discussion of restrictive eating.

1. Jennifer Lawrence took umbrage to a viral Kate Moss quote about being skinny.

ET / Via youtube.comIf you were on Tumblr around 2010, you’ve certainly seen the Kate Moss quote “nothing tastes as good as skinny feels” floating around. In 2011, Jennifer Lawrence hit back at the quote while on the Oscars red carpet.

“There’s that Kate Moss quote that’s like ‘Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels,’” the actress told ET. “And I can name a lot of things that taste better than skinny feels: bread, potatoes, a Philly cheesesteak, and fries.”

2. Kim Kardashian was called out by Lili Reinhart after starving herself for the Met Gala.

When Kim K walked the red carpet in Marilyn Monroe’s old dress, she admitted to a reporter that she’d starved herself to fit in the iconic garment. Lili Reinhart was so appalled that she took to her Instagram story to call Kim out. “To walk on a red carpet and do an interview where you say how starving you are… because you haven’t eaten carbs in the last month… all to fit in a f*cking dress? So wrong. So f*cked on 100s of levels,” the Riverdale actress wrote.

“The ignorance is otherworldly disgusting,” Lili added.

3. Gwyneth Paltrow’s “wellness routine” made headlines for being super unhealthy.

On The Art of Being Well podcast with Dr. Will Cole, Gwyneth revealed that a typical day of eating starts with fasting until lunchtime, then after exercising for an hour, she’ll typically have some soup — which is often just bone broth.

After a clip of the podcast went viral on TikTok, people slammed her for promoting under-eating and diet culture, labelling the star an “almond mom.” A dietician told BuzzFeed that Gwyneth’s diet “definitely screams disordered eating to me.”

4. People weren’t pleased when David Beckham revealed that his wife Victoria eats basically the same thing every day.

In a 2022 podcast interview, David Beckham called out his wife’s eating habits. “I’m married to someone that has eaten the same thing for the last 25 years. Since I met Victoria, she only eats grilled fish, steamed vegetables. She will very rarely deviate away from there.”

If that wasn’t enough, back in 2021, the designer told Vogue that her comfort food is “whole grain toast with salt on it.”

5. Lizzo had a lot of angry fans after she went on a 10-day juice cleanse.

Back in 2020, Lizzo shared a bunch of videos to social media promoting the 10-day smoothie detox diet she was undertaking. “I feel amazing, and I think that it’s just great to reset your stomach and reset things, especially when you deal with gastrointestinal issues like I do,” the singer said. “I think I look f***ing great, too!”

Almost immediately, there was a toooooon of backlash. “You have an organ that detoxes your body. Cleanses and detoxes are scams, this is actually really disappointing to see,” one fan commented. “Seeing you promote diet culture is breaking my heart,” another added.

6. Twitter founder Jack Dorsey made headlines for saying that he only eats one meal a day, which people had a lot of issues with.

He revealed in a podcast interview that restricting his eating and sticking to just one low-carb meal a day — dinner — boosts his focus and gets him in “a new dimension.” Jack added that sometimes he’ll go the whole weekend without eating, too.

People were quick to call out his toxic eating habits: “It’s yet another grim example of a Silicon Valley guy who doesn’t realize he has an eating disorder,” one person Tweeted.

7. Hilary Duff said that she’ll skip breakfast in favor of coffee, even if she’s hungry.

On the Lipstick on the Rim podcast, the former Disney star said: “Sometimes, I just try to drink black coffee in the morning to stave [sic] off my hunger,” also acknowledging that Gwyneth Paltrow got in trouble for the same thing.

People didn’t love hearing this from Hilary, as evidenced by the comments left on the TikTok clip from the podcast. “Dang hil duff… what a let down!” one person wrote. “This isn’t the move… women are sick to death of this sh*t. I like these women, but this…is garbage. Hope you like the engagement,” commented another.

8. Scientists quickly and loudly shut down Tom Brady when he announced that he drinks a lot of water to prevent sunburn.

The football star told Sports Illustrated that he used to get burnt a lot as a kid, but doesn’t anymore. “These days, even if I get an adequate amount of sun, I won’t get a sunburn, which I credit to the amount of water I drink,” he said.

After being called out via social media, it didn’t take long for *actual* scientists to also weigh in. “This is fake news,” a scientist told NBC. “The only thing that prevents sunburn is minimizing time spent in the sun during peak hours (10 a.m.–2 p.m.), wearing sun protective clothing and sunscreen.”

9. Kourtney Kardashian was called “controlling” for restricting her kids’ diets.

E!

Not only is Kourtney mostly vegan, she has also been public about her decision to cut out gluten, dairy, and sugar from her and her children’s lives. She famously tried to ban sugar from her niece North West’s birthday party on an episode of KUWTK.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Kourtney says that she refuses to let her son Mason eat McDonald’s, and praises him for saying that people who let him eat junk food are “bad.”

A screenshot of the article was posted to Reddit, where users commented that she could be causing her kids to have an unhealthy relationship with food. “What the actual f*ck,” one person wrote. “That is not how you teach your kids to make healthy choices and fuel their bodies. That is definitely how you harbor bad attitudes toward food.”

10. Jameela Jamil put Kim K on blast for promoting diet lollipops.

When the reality star did a sponsored post for appetite-suppressing candy, Jameela Jamil had simply had enough. She wrote on Twitter: “No. F*ck off. No. You terrible and toxic influence on young girls. I admire their mother’s branding capabilities, she is an exploitative but innovative genius, however this family makes me feel actual despair over what women are reduced to.”

11. Jameela also gave Kim’s sister Khloe the same treatment when Khloe promoted a weight-loss shake.

Khloe shared a (now-deleted) photo to Instagram showing off her flat stomach, claiming to have started drinking the shakes two weeks prior and saying that the “progress” was “undeniable.”

Jameela left a comment for Khloe saying that the star should probably also disclose that she has a personal trainer, a chef, and a surgeon, adding, “It’s incredibly awful that the media bullied you until you became this fixated on your appearance. That’s the media’s fault. But now, please don’t put that back into the world, and hurt other girls the way you have been hurt. You’re a smart woman. Be smarter than this.”

12. Miranda Kerr got roasted after sharing info about using celery juice to help combat COVID infections.

Steve Granitz / FilmMagic

The Aussie supermodel shared a post on Instagram in early 2020 promoting a “Virus Protection” guide from a self-proclaimed “medical medium” who says his advice comes from “communication with gods,” which touted celery juice as a prevention for infection.

Hundreds of commenters called the post “dangerous,” “tone deaf,” “irresponsible,” and “shameful.” UK surgeon Joshua Wolrich commented: “ABSOLUTELY NOT. Do better with your influence. This ‘virus protection’ guide is full of unscientific nonsense that has ZERO medical validity. … Misinformation is dangerous. Stop spreading it.”

13. When Jennifer Aniston revealed that she sometimes stress-eats a single chip, the internet had some thoughts.

Steve Granitz / FilmMagic

In an InStyle interview, the actress was asked what she eats when she’s stressed out. “A chip,” she said, clarifying that yes, she did mean “just one chip.” Jen added: “Usually. I’m good at that. I can have one M&M, one chip. I know, that’s so annoying.”

While some saw the humor in Jennifer’s revelation, others pointed out how dangerous comments like this can be. “This is why women my age develop eating disorders, myself included,” one person wrote.

14. Adele’s fans felt “betrayed” by her weight loss, saying that it was done in an unhealthy way.

InstagramView this photo on InstagramInstagram: @adele

The British singer said that she lost weight slowly thanks to a newfound love of exercise to help manage anxiety. Of course, that didn’t stop tabloids claiming that she’d lost weight thanks to the fad-y Sirtfood Diet, which caused fans to turn on the star for “giving into the pressure.”

Adele maintains that she lost 100 pounds in a healthy way, and if anything, she eats more now as she’s exercising a lot.
