“Luton weren’t in the finals then, but they are now!” he added as the broadcaster chuckled along to the fond memory.

The journalist – who also presenter BBC Midlands – admitted that despite the impressive win for his favourite team, he did feel a sense of sadness for Coventry after working in the Midlands for so long.

He confessed: "It's strange really because I'm very fond of Coventry City as a football club because I know so many people there, both behind the scenes and supporters.

"I feel very sad for them because they're a hugely worthy cause to back there to get up to the Premier League after what they've been through, and to loose on penalty points – how cruel is it to lose anything on penalty points."

Nick continued: "It has been a hard tightrope to walk about Coventry as a known Luton supporter so I'm sad for them personally.

"But obviously I'm excited for our football club and I'm sure Coventry will have its time again because they're a fine football club and they're on the up."
