Luton Town will play in the Premier League next season nine years after they competed in the National League – but Histon FC have gone the other way.

Luton beat The Stutes 5-1 and 4-0 in the 2010/11 National League season and finished in third place as Histon suffered the first of many relegations since.

The Hatters failed to make it out the playoffs again in the subsequent campaign, but were in League Two in 2014/15 and League One four years later.

Just one season in the third tier came in 2018/19, with three Championship seasons culminating in their play-off final victory over Coventry City on Sunday.

Meanwhile, having missed out on promotion to the Football League with a play-off defeat against Torquay in 2008/09, Histon were in the seventh tier Southern League by 2014/15.

Relegation to Division One Central in 2016 was followed by spells in the Eastern Counties League, Isthmian League, the Northern Premier League and United Counties League.

Histon now play their football in the United Counties League Premier Division South, where they finished sixth of 18 teams, which is the ninth tier.

The brutal nature of English football means the two clubs will have seven full divisions between them next season, having faced off just 12 years ago.

The story of the weekend belongs to Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu, who will become the first player to play for the same club from the National League all the way to the Premier League.

He laughed after the win over Coventry on penalties: "I feel like I've completed football!

"I can retire right now. It's been a journey, been through the highs and lows, but in the end you've got to believe in yourself."

Luton players are also being treated to a trip to Las Vegas, with work needing to be done on Kenilworth Road if it is to reach Premier League minimum standards.
