Tim Allen Takes Another Shot At Chris Evans’ ‘Lightyear’ Film

A few years ago, Disney produced a film called “Lightyear,” which told the story of Buzz Lightyear and was confirmed to be a prequel to the “Toy Story” films. Still, Chris Evans voiced the iconic character, and not Tim Allen, who said the action figure in the first four “Toy Story” movies.

In a previous interview, Tom Hanks, the longtime voice of Woody from the “Toy Story” franchise, did not hold back and showed he was not happy with “Lightyear” producers as he admitted to wanting to do the sequel with longtime friend and co-star, Allen, but “they didn’t let Tim Allen do it.” He said, “I don’t understand that.” Many believe it has to do with politics as Allen’s views don’t align with most of Hollywood, but that has not been confirmed.

Now, Allen is speaking out on “Lightyear,” admitting the movie was “confusing.”

When speaking on “Lightyear” compared to “Toy Story,” the 69-year-old original voice of Buzz Lightyear told DailyMail, “They were two completely different movies. And Chris [Evans] did a great job doing an ancillary part. It was very confusing to all of us on the ‘Toy Story’ movie side, which was real?”

He continued, “I’m a script guy, so if Buzz is real, then Chris [Evans] ‘s version of it was, as an actor doing it, really confusing to me.”

In the “Toy Story” film franchise, Buzz Lightyear, voiced by Tim Allen, was a toy who thought he was an astronaut, while “Lightyear,” starring Chris Evans, was supposed to be the movie the toy is based on. Unlike the “Toy Story” movies, “Lightyear” essentially flopped in the theaters, earning just $51.7 million in North America in its first weekend. It lost the studio an estimated $106 million.

After “Lightyear” was announced, Chris Evans spoke out on his expectations to fill the shoes of the iconic Pixar character, Buzz Lightyear, stating, “Its scary territory to kind of enter specifically because I’ve never really had the responsibility of such a character. I’ve done one voice before, maybe two, but they were small roles, so this is a bit more weight.”

Evans continued, “It’s a character that has already been played by someone very, very well, so you have big shoes to fill, but at the end of the day, you just put your trust in Pixar and trust that they know what they’re doing.”

“Lightyear” producer Galyn Susman recently defended the film, stating, “Tim Allen is Buzz Lightyear the toy. We weren’t making a ‘Toy Story’ movie. We’re making Buzz Lightyear’s movie.”

Pixar boss Pete Docter also spoke out on the disappointing box office numbers surrounding “Lightyear,” blaming the unrealistic expectations.

“When they hear Buzz, they’re like, great, where’s Mr. Potato Head and Woody and Rex?” Docter said, “And then we drop them into this science fiction film that they’re like, What? I think in how characters were drawn, they were portrayed. It was much more science fiction. I think there was a disconnect between what people wanted/expected and what we gave them.”

The film was released on Father’s Day weekend in 2022 but went up against tough competition, including “Jurassic World: Dominion” and “Top Gun: Maverick.”
