Ahoy! A new Disney live-action remake is upon us, which means that it’s time to fight over the songs our glorious mouse overlords decided to add, amend, and axe through the wondrous process of adaptation.

DisneyThe 2023 version of The Little Mermaid has far fewer dead fish. Allow me to present a theory: I’ve heard it said that the union of Eric and Ariel in the original movie would spell economic catastrophe for Eric’s kingdom, which appears to be a fishing community. I’m not saying that’s why the new Eric’s island seems to be more interested in the trade of non-fish goods, I’m just saying that the correlation is there.

Anyway, there is no “Les Poissons.” Are you really sad?

AMENDED: “Kiss the Girl.”

Disney

This tracks with some of the changes made to the opening, where there is no concert for Ariel to have missed. Hell, Sebastian isn’t the palace composer in this one. I guess it’s less wildly out of his job description to babysit Ariel this way? Anyway, to be fair, the new sisters’ names are Caspia, Indira, Perla, Karina, Mala, and Tamika. Maybe that’s harder to put in a song? (It’s not).

Side note: Anyone else have a Little Mermaid video game where the opening menu had “Daughters of Triton” playing in the background? Circa the year 2000-something?

AMENDED: “Poor Unfortunate Souls.”

Disney / Via youtube.com This is a sadder version of the reprise that’s added near the movie’s climax. The lyrics are beautiful and, as someone pointed out in the YouTube comments, feel fitting for how the book version might have ended. I’m fine. I’m fine!

What do you make of these choices? LMK in the comments!
