Bob Iger Rejected ‘Mandalorian’ Retheme Idea For ‘Star Wars’ Hotel

The “Star Wars”: Galactic Starcruiser was groundbreaking for the Walt Disney Company; however, after months of struggling to sell voyages, Disney announced it would close the experience just 18 months after it opened.

The news shocked many, leaving fans wondering why Disney wouldn’t attempt to retheme the experience or even lower the price before they decided to close the entire hotel.

It seems that Disney did think about ways to save the “Star Wars”: Galactic Starcruiser, but Disney CEO Bob Iger turned it down.

According to reports, before Disney decided to shut down the “Star Wars”: Galactic Starcruiser for good, some suggested turning the hotel into an experience inspired by “The Mandalorian,” an extremely popular “Star Wars” series exclusively on Disney+.

However, Disney CEO Bob Iger turned that idea down, as well as others, including the possibility of giving day Guests “tours” of the “Star Wars”-inspired hotel that would allow access to the bar, dinner, and gift shop.

Ultimately, the Walt Disney Company CEO closed the “Star Wars”: Galactic Starcruiser instead.

A Disney insider told an outlet that the reason the sales did not meet expectations was more than likely due to the cost of the voyages. Every stay aboard the Starcruiser is two-night stays with a starting price of more than $4,800 for two people and around $6,000 for a family of four, making it more expensive than many anticipated. However, it is all-inclusive and does offer a one-of-a-kind immersive experience.

The Disney insider explained that only a few wealthy guests could afford a voyage aboard the “Star Wars”: Galactic Starcruiser. “Once you went through the one-percenters who could afford it and the fanatical ‘Star Wars’ fans who would sell their mother to do it, you were done,” they said.

Disney Parks Chairman Josh D’Amaro recently shed more light on the decision to close “Star Wars”: Galactic Starcruiser, saying, “While the Starcruiser experience offered a groundbreaking and unprecedented adventure, its performance did not meet our expectations. Therefore, we have decided to sunset the experience in September.”

There are still voyages available for any last-minute decision to experience the “Star Wars”: Galactic Starcruiser before it closes for good at the end of September. Disney announced the final voyage would take place from September 28-September 30.

Disney describes the experience as: “Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser is a revolutionary 2-night experience where you are the hero. You and your group will embark on a first-of-its-kind Star Wars adventure that’s your own. It’s the most immersive Star Wars story ever created—one where you live a bespoke experience and journey further into a Star Wars adventure than you ever dreamed possible.”

The closing of Galactic Starcruiser was announced shortly after Disney said it plans to cut overall costs by more than $5 billion. They are canceling its plans to build a $1 billion office complex in Orlando, Florida.
