The Premier League’s statistical worst XI of the season has been revealed and it includes four Leeds United players and a Tottenham Hotspur flop

Football data website Sofascore used their average player ratings from throughout the campaign to make their XI of the lowest rated players for the 2022/23 season.

The team unsurprisingly leans heavily towards those relegated sides but Leeds’ dismal relegation campaign has been epitomised by them having the most amount of players named in the side.

Sam Allardyce was unable to come to Leeds’ rescue as the Elland Road outfit were relegated in 19th place after failing to win a game under the experienced survivalist master.

Southampton were doomed with weeks still to play as their season finished with a whimper at the foot of the table, whilst Leicester City were relegated in 18th place despite winning on the final day.

Although they didn’t finish bottom, Leeds see defenders Junior Firpo and Robin Koch named in the defence, whilst Brenden Aaronson takes the attacking midfield spot behind Patrick Bamford who is the striker.

The rest of the side sees Southampton’s Gavin Bazunu, who only arrived in the summer from Manchester City, named as the goalkeeper with an average rating of 6.58 after shipping 56 league goals.

Despite their survival, Bournemouth’s Adam Smith is named at right-back with a 6.53, Firpo is the other full-back with a 6.55 average rating.

The second Leeds pick Koch averaged 6.63 and partners the eye-catching inclusion of Tottenham Hotspurs’ on loan centre-back Clement Lenglet who received a 6.65 after a miserable loan spell from Barcelona.

The French international played 26 times in the league as Spurs finished outside of the European places for the first time in a decade.

Nottingham Forest’s pairing of Orel Mangala and Remo Freuler take the two centre-midfield spots with both averaging a 6.67 rating, despite Steve Cooper’s side surviving the drop in their first Premier League season since the turn of the century.

The second Saints man in the line-up is Mohamed Elyounoussi who managed just two goal involvements in 33 league games – seeing him earn a 6.64 rating and the lowest of the forwards.

Aaronson’s 6.51 rating saw him included at attacking midfield after arriving at Elland Road for £30million in the summer. Fulham’s Bobby Decordova-Reid was named on the right with a 6.65 rating despite the Cottagers finishing in 10th place.

The pick of the bunch up top is Bamford who managed a 6.60 rating after scoring just four goals in 28 games – missing 13 big chances in the league this season including a missed penalty in the 2-2 draw against Newcastle United, just three games before the season’s end in a pivotal moment in their failed battle to stay up.
