‘I won £10k but won’t pay for my friend’s holiday – just because I hate her boyfriend’

A woman who recently won £10,000 had initially planned to give some to her best pal of 20 years. But, now she’s not so sure because of her mate’s new boyfriend.

Sharing the dilemma online, the lady explained that she’d recently come into the cash and wanted to treat her friend who earns less than her. Unfortunately, she thinks her friend's new bloke is an "absolute loser".

Posting on Mumsnet, she said that she hadn’t spent any money yet. The issue all began when she told her mate about the £10k win – within an hour the pal had asked for £1,000 to take her family on holiday.

She planned to pay the money back after using it to go away with her young son and new lover. The mate said she hadn’t been away for two years, but the woman who won the money doubted she could pay the amount back.

The poster claimed she didn’t mind much and would have given her the cash, but that she didn’t want to treat her new man who seemed like a "sponger". She explained: "He's late 40s, never kept a job longer than a few months, can't drive so has my friend ferry him about everywhere.

"[He] has a child but has never made any effort to meet them and abandoned their mum. [He] moved in with my friend and now she waits on him hand and foot, while he plays PlayStation all day on his arse!

"[My friend] is continually defending him saying, 'Oh well he's just never settled in one job, or he’s been through a lot' so we've agreed to disagree now when she asks my opinion of him."

One person advised: "If you really wanted to treat your friend to such a major purchase, could you suggest a holiday together for just you and her along with her son? But I can't believe she had the cheek to ask."

Another commented: "You were daft to tell anyone. It's not a large enough amount to help everyone and you can bet if you give her some money there'll be others who ask.

"Just tell her you've decided you need to put it in a pension or something, but take her and her son out for dinner on you if you want to treat her."
