Rio Ferdinand reckons he’d cost more than Kylian Mbappe – and be on £400k per week

Manchester United hero Rio Ferdinand believes he would be worth more than Kylian Mbappe in today's money.

The ex-England centre-back, now 44, commanded a £30m transfer fee when crossing the Pennines from Leeds United – a move that saw him shatter the record for the most expensive British footballer.

Ferdinand spent over a decade on the books at Old Trafford during the club's glory years, racking up six Premier League titles, two League Cups and the Champions League under the stewardship of legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

An inductee into the Premier League Hall of Fame earlier this year, the footballer-turned-pundit has priced himself at a staggering £170m in the current market – making him more valuable than PSG's Kylian Mbappe.

Speaking on Ferdinand's YouTube channel VIBE with FIVE, presenter Joel Beya said: "Look at the prices now, do you know what I mean, £30m today…" Before co-host, Stephen Howson added: "21 years ago. I think you're the second or third highest, they've adjusted for inflation.

"I think it's Shearer's the highest and then yours is like the second or third highest. I think you're £100m plus now with inflation." And Ferdinand answered: "I was £30m back in the day. £100m will be cheap mate. Serious, in today's market… £170m… 400k-a-week. That's what I'll be now. I would be that now."

A £170m price tag would make Ferdinand the second-most expensive footballer of all-time – £5m more than the fee PSG paid for Mbappe in the summer of 2018. After rattling home 27 goals in 60 matches the Ligue 1 giants forked out £165m to pry him away from Monaco – Mbappe has since won the division's Player of the Year award in four out of his five seasons at the Parc Des Princes.

PSG team-mate Neymar holds the transfer record after joining the Parisians for circa £200m. A £400k-a-week salary would place Ferdinand joint-top of the Premier League's highest-earners, alongside Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne.
