20 Indian TV Shows That Are More Than 20 Years Old But We Still Love Them

1. Dekh Bhai Dekh (1993)

Zee TVThis was the first Indian cooking show any of us ever watched and it essentially marked the beginning of food reality television in our country. I have lost count of the number of times I watched Sanjeev Kapoor as a kid and craved the food he prepared.

Also, did you know that this show was directed by Hansal Mehta? You know, the same guy who made Scam 1992, Scoop, Aligarh, and Shahid?

5. Surabhi (1990)

Cinema Vision India

You probably remember Surabhi and being in awe of all the facts about art and culture that you learnt from it. It was truly iconic! Also, don’t we absolutely love Renuka Shahane?

6. Saans (1998)

Star Plus

Saans had a unique and progressive storyline and actors like Neena Gupta and Kanwaljit Singh who made the show a memorable one with their stellar performances. Oh and it was also written AND directed by Neena!

7. Tu Tu Main Main (1994)

Prime Channel

Remember this show? It really gave life to slapstick comedy and the now (in)famous mother and daughter-in-law trope. Starring Reema Lagoo and Supriya Pilgaonkar, it was directed by Sachin Pilgaonkar — aka Shriya Pilgaonkar’s parents! OH AND DID YOU KNOW THAT THE SHOW IS MAKING A COMEBACK??!

8. Shaktimaan (1997)

Bheeshm International

Even if you did not regularly watch it, you most definitely remember this show. A defining moment for the Indian superhero universe, Shaktimaan was a staple watch in most of our households.

9. Aahat (1995)

Fireworks Productions

This was from a time when horror was actually more than just VFX. Aahat really made our skin crawl and horrified us as children. I still have nightmares.

10. Kasautii Zindagii Kay (2001)

Balaji Telefilms

I think every 90s and 00s kid remembers watching this show, probably with their moms. The OG Anurag and Prerna were a couple that we still ship.

11. Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii (2000)

Balaji Telefilms

Watching Parvati, the protagonist of the show, go through all sorts of hell as she tried to keep the family together was some heavy stuff, but we still did it.

12. Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi (2000)

Balaji Telefilms

It really messed with our minds when Mihir Virani died and was later reborn, didn’t it?

13. Boogie Woogie (1996)

R&N TV Productions

This was and will always be the OG dance show! Did you, like me, also hope and dream to make it on the show and impress the judges?

14. Shararat (2003)

UTV Software Communications

We all loved watching Nani save the day, adored Jiya, and slightly disliked Pam for being her frenemy. I still chant “shring bring sarvaling, bhoot bhavishya vartaman badling” every now and then.

15. Karishma Kaa Karishma (2003)

Alliance Media & Entertainment

Our very own Small Wonder with the catchiest title track that still lives rent-free in my head.

16. Khichdi (2002)

Hats Off Productions

One can’t possibly forget the show that still gives us unmatched meme content, 21 years later!

17. Shaka Laka Boom Boom (2000)

UTV Software Communications

It’s been TWENTY THREE years and I still really want that pencil to draw my troubles away.

18. Sarabhai vs Sarabhai (2004)

Hats Off Productions

This is one show that never gets old and continues to have us in splits, even after several repeat viewings. Oh and the memes! How could we possibly not talk about the memes?!

As Maya would say, “Monisha beta, evergreen bolo, old bolna is too middle class!”.

19. Sanjivani (2002)

Cinevistaas Limited

You most definitely thought about becoming a doctor while watching this show. Grey’s Anatomy who?

20. Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin (2003)

DJ’s a Creative Unit

The show that gave us Mona Singh and marked the rise of Apurva Agnihotri. Jassi really deserved the best because there certainly was no one like her!
