Darren Barnet Didn’t Like Jaren Lewison At First, And Other Secrets Revealed From The Cast Of “Never Have I Ever”
The fourth and final season of Never Have I Ever is now streaming on Netflix, so you know we had to catch up with the iconic cast at Tudum: A Global Fan Event in São Paulo, Brazil on Saturday.
NetflixWith fans chanting “Devi” throughout the evening (cries in Canadian), Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Jaren Lewison and Darren Barnet sat down with us to chat about their first impressions of each other, their fav on set memories, and even played a round of Never Have I Ever!
Congrats on the final season! When you look back on this ride, what was your first impression of each other and who has surprised you the most?
Jaren: Darren didn’t like me at first.
Darren: Yeah, I didn’t like him. We were in the same screen test day and I thought he was reading for my role so I was like, oh competition. I’m very focused when I’m about to do my thing and he was just chipper little Jaren.
Jaren: I was just excited to be there!
Darren: I thought you were trying to get in my head and mess with me. So I was like, alright. When we came to the first table read that all switched. I was like, he’s my co-worker, hopefully going to become my friend. I think we all became friends very quickly. It was amazing.
Maitreyi: I think my first impressions of you guys are pretty spot on. I like to think you’re (at Jaren) the same person I met that first day. And I feel like I quickly got down that you’re (at Darren) an absolute dork. Like people think Darren is suave, like super slick. No, it’s all a front. He’s just a brilliant actor.
When you look back at this chapter of your life, what’s the one memory that will come to mind?
Jaren: Like for me, it would be on the last day when we called cut for the final time— the scene that I finished with Maitreyi. I remember there being a beat of silence. And then Lang [Fisher] just sort of said, ‘Yeah, well, I guess we did it’. And that was it. The air in the room, that energy… I don’t know if you can describe that feeling. I think that will kind of stick with me forever.
Darren: Wow, that just hit me in the stomach.
Maitreyi: Like the wind gets knocked out of you. I don’t know if that would be the thing that I remember though. In 10 years from now, it’ll be a random thing from my subconscious. A random day on set.Like, maybe the day I learned about what a spit bucket was. Because I could see myself in 10 years— hear me out, 10 years from now on a different show. I’m gonna be using a spit bucket and I’m gonna say, ‘Oh, I remember the day I learned about what a spit bucket was.’ And I remember refusing to use it and I ate every single rib in that very shot— in the first 15 minutes of episode one remember?
Darren: I think I will always remember bowling. That’s the first time we ever met at the table [read]. And they told us we could do whatever we wanted— and we all took it literally. We left the lot and we’re not supposed to do that. But I’ll always remember that. Breaking the rules since day one.

All three: Yes!
Maitreyi: I got them ketchup chips! Every single time I come back from Canada and I’m getting ready to film back in LA— I bring one whole suitcase just filled with maple cookies, maple syrup candies and ketchup chips.
Jaren: Bottles too, she got really nice bottles of maple syrup!
Darren: I can live off of Canadian snacks.
Maitrey to Darren: You like the ketchup chips. You love the ketchup chips.
Darren: Those and All Dressed are amazing!
