Austrian GP’s results changed as ‘amateur hour’ sees FIA delete 83 lap times

The Austrian Grand Prix results had to be changed after the FIA deleted 83 lap times for track limit violations.

As many as 1,200 potential offences were reported to race control on Sunday (July 2). F1's governing body admitted the stewards couldn't evaluate them all as they happened due to the extreme influx.

After a post-race review, multiple penalties were handed out. Carlos Sainz fell from fourth to sixth, George Russell leapfrogged Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton into seventh and Lance Stroll moved up to ninth with him and Pierre Gasly switching places.

The podium of Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc and Sergio Perez remained the same, however. In total eight drivers were penalised.

Sainz, Hamilton and Gasly were docked 10 seconds, as were Alex Albon and Logan Sargeant who had finished 11th and 13th respectively.

Esteban Ocon (12th) was punished the most with a 30 second penalty. Nyck de Vries' (15th) was 15 seconds, while Yuki Tsunoda (18th) got a five second penalty.

Seven drivers received time penalties during the race, but several incidents of track limits being violated that didn't go under review came to light after the finish.

Aston Martin lodged a protest over the provisional classification which was upheld by the stewards as they began combing through the four-figure number of possible infringements.

They gained an additional three points as a result of the changes, with Fernando Alonso moving up from sixth to fifth. Lando Norris, meanwhile, inherited fourth.

Fans fumed at the shambolic situation, which was resolved five hours after the chequered flag.

One tweeted: "Unbelieveable that #F1 is in this position, tbh. It looks like complete amateur hour at the @fia yet again."

Another fumed: "What a s***show this sport has become." And a third argued: "Horrendous look for F1 today. Already huge tensions between F1 and the FIA over stuff like this and can’t see this helping things going forward."
