Emmys 2023: The Nominations

323The lead-up to the 75th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards has been a historic one already, to say the least. The nominations for the 2023 Emmys are being announced on the same day that Hollywood actors are preparing to go on strike if their union SAG-AFTRA can’t strike a deal with the studios by midnight. This, of course, is all meanwhile the WGA (Writer’s Guild) has entered its 11th week of striking. The two unions represent a large piece of the industry’s backbone and are fighting for fair wages, increased residual payments to accommodate the complexities of streaming, and creative protections against the use of artificial intelligence in the studios. If SAG-AFTRA does go on strike, it would mark the first time in 63 years that both actors and writers are picketing over contract disputes.

Therefore, this leaves the Television Academy in a very weird place. The awards body still has to move forward with revealing its 2023 nominations, but the actual Emmys might get delayed until late this year or even January 2024. Considering that the studios and streamers are currently showing no positive signs of negotiating with the actors and writers, it’s looking like the wait for the actual awards ceremony is going to be long after the 2023 Emmys nominations are revealed today. Obviously, two of Hollywood’s largest unions on strike also means that all film and TV productions will go on pause and face delays as actors and writers will be encouraged to stay on the picket lines in solidarity.

HBO once again dominated the Emmy nominations with Succession coming in on top with 27 nods followed by The Last of Us with 24 and The White Lotus with 23. Succession, in particular, set a new record with 3 nominations in the Best Actor in a Drama Series category. Furthermore, the Supporting Actor in a Drama Series category is made up entirely of names from Succession and The White Lotus. The Supporting Actress in a Drama Series category has 5 names from The White Lotus as well. The Last of Us also scored acting nominations for the majority of its cast, including Pedro Pascal, Bella Ramsey, Nick Offerman, Murray Bartlett, Lamar Johnson, Keivonn Montreal Woodard, Melanie Lynskey, Storm Reid, and Anna Torv. Woodard, who played the young survivor Sam on the show, specifically became the second youngest Emmy nominee of all time at only ten years old.

The final season of Apple TV’s Ted Lasso came in fourth place at the 2023 Emmys with 21 nominations and is followed by the final season of Prime Video’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel with 14. Netflix’s Beef and Dahmer—Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story then tie with Hulu’s The Bear with 13 nods each. There are plenty of other surprises sprinkled throughout the 2023 Emmy nominations, including some love for Wednesday, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Andor, Barry, and Only Murders in the Building. And, yes, Better Call Saul did earn nods for Bob Odenkirk, Rhea Seehorn, and co-creator and showrunner Peter Gould in its final chance to win an Emmy after previously being nominated 46 times total with no wins.

Overall, HBO/Max earned 127 nominations total at the 2023 Emmys. Meanwhile, Netflix came in second place with 103 nods, Apple TV+ in third with 46, and Hulu and Prime Video both tied in fourth with 42 each. Disney+ then lands in fifth place with 40 nominations. These awards are divided into the main Emmys ceremony and the Creative Arts Emmys, which cover the more technical and niche categories. Did your favorite shows get the spotlight they deserve, or worse… get snubbed? Check out all the nominations below and stay tuned as we cover the Emmys leading up to the big (tentative) night on Monday, September 18, 2023! In the meantime, you can also refresh your memory and find the final winners here for this year’s Oscars, Golden Globes, Critics Choice, BAFTAs, SAG Awards, and our very own DiscussingFilm Critics Awards.
