Demi Lovato is opening up about one of the bravest things for queer people!

The “Camp Rock” star openly declared her gender identity in 2021. Ever since, she has advocated for the non-binary gender, creating awareness. While the 30-year-old actress is now confident about her sexuality, there were some walls she had to break through, including coming out of the closet.

Lovato recently revealed how she opened up to her parents about her sexuality and their reaction.

As most queer people have stories of opening up about their sexuality to their parents, the “Sorry Not Sorry” singer is no different. In an interview on the “Sirius XM” show, Lovato recalled how she let the cat out of the bag and their reaction.

According to the singer, she grew up being queer but kept her identity hidden as she couldn’t tell anyone. Lovato explained, “I came from a Christian background and grew up queer but didn’t tell people until I felt comfortable with it.”

Having been in the closet for a long time, the singer said she came out at 25. “It took me until I was 25 to come out to my mom,” Lovato declared. “At the time, I was bisexual, and then I realized I was pansexual. It took me a while. It was kind of funny because I released ‘Cool for the Summer’ before I came out to my parents.”

The hit song contained lyrics that the Disney star believed hinted at her sexuality. A line from the song reads, “Got a test for the cherry/I just need to take a bite.”

Although she had already started revealing her identity, Lovato noted that she didn’t feel ready to come out. However, all that changed as she eventually let the cat out of the bag! The “Barney and Friends” described how she told her parents of her sexuality, telling her stepdad before her mom.

Lovato said, “‘Hey, I need to tell you something; I like girls too.’ And he was like, ‘Yeah. I know you have “Cool for the Summer” out, and I was like: ‘Oh.’”

When Lovato broke the news to her mom, she was equally received with open arms. Recalling how she broke the news to her mom, the “Warrior” singer said, “I was getting ready to go on a date with a girl, and I didn’t know if I would be photographed or what would happen, and I really liked this girl, and I was like: ‘I think it’s time to tell my mom in case it becomes serious.’”

She continued, “I sat my mom down and said: ‘I need to talk to you. You know, I am about to go on a date with a girl, and I just wanted you to know and hear from me that I like girls too. She almost started crying and was like, ‘I just want you to be happy.’”

While the “Stone Cold” singer goes by two different sets of pronouns, she wants a more gender-neutral space that fosters inclusivity and acceptance. For the multi-talented, creating such an environment is essential to accommodate individuals who identify outside of the traditional gender binary.

Through Lovato’s journey of self-discovery and exploration of gender identity, she has acquired experiences of the challenges faced by non-binary individuals. One such challenge was the labeling of restrooms in traditional gender settings. “I face this every day, for example, in public toilets,” the songwriter shared. “Having to access the women’s bathroom, even though I don’t completely identify with it.”
