Fans, teammates keep mistaking Mike Trout and other Angels outfielder

The duo are not only both “big white guys,” as Renfroe tells Stephanie Apstein of Sports Illustrated, but both Renfroe and Trout are also both 31, righthanded and outfielders who “walk with a certain swagger,” per Apstein. The former is listed at 6-foot-1, 230 pounds while the three-time AL MVP is 6-foot-2, 235 pounds.
“And it’s not just fans: Even some of their teammates have looked twice,” she wrote. “There is something about the broad cheekbones, the scruffy facial hair, the way they squint at the incoming pitch.”
While Renfroe has apparently been addressed as “Mike” multiple times by fans, asking for autographs, Trout hasn’t yet been asked to sign anything for the former San Diego Padres first-round pick, according to Apstein.
“They do look alike,” Angels general manager Perry Minasian said, per Apstein. “It’s kind of crazy. Their lockers are next to each other now, so once in a while I walk by and I have to do a double-take.”
Trout, who has spent his entire 13-year career with the franchise, is off to another hot start in 2023. In 82 at-bats over 21 games he has five home runs and 13 RBI, while leading the team in hits (26), doubles (eight), walks (13), batting average (.317), on-base percentage (.423), slugging percentage (.598) and OPS (1.020).
Renfroe has been nearly as good at the plate, if not as good as his teammate. In a team-high 89 at-bats over 23 games, he’s leading the Angels in home runs (six) and RBI (18) and is tied with Trout for the lead in runs scored (16).
Though the season is still young, Renfroe is also currently on pace for career bests in batting average (.270), on-base percentage (.343), slugging percentage (.551) and OPS (.894).
Despite the co-stars of Trout and Shohei Ohtani being joined by a red-hot Renfroe this April, the team is still under .500 at 11-12 and in third place in the AL West.
