These Actors Cried So Realistically We Were Genuinely Worried For Them
Gina Rodriguez in Jane The Virgin – her breakdown scene where she gets the call about Michael. That cry is so authentic and heartbreaking.

All actors should know how to cry, right? But sometimes, an actor’s sobbing is so convincing that it just makes you think “wow, that’s some serious acting” (as you begin to weep, too).

20th Century Fox

So we recently asked the BuzzFeed Community which actor has the best on-screen cry of all time, and they sent in some excellent weepers. Here are 27 of the most popular submissions.

1. Ewan McGregor as Christian in Moulin Rouge!

Netflix

“When Nick came out to her! It is such an emotional scene and it really shows how brilliant an actor she is!”

—fuzzywuzzykoala

ABC

“When Derek takes her fishing to try to get her operating again, she catches that fish and tilts her head up, eyes closed and starts crying. She finally takes back control of her life and you can just feel everything she was feeling at that moment. She is such an incredible actor.”

—ariellej4

4. Matthew McConaughey as Cooper in Interstellar

Paramount Pictures

“When he’s driving away from his kids at the beginning. Knowing he’s willingly leaving his children for a reason bigger than them is so touching. It’s a gut-punch of a scene every time.”

—kimitapet264

Sony Pictures Classics / Warner Bros. Pictures

“The pain you see on his face when he cries… My heart aches just thinking about it.”

—lyndaamc

The Cw

“Especially her breakdown scene where she gets the call about Michael. That cry is so authentic and heartbreaking. No matter how many times I watch that show, if Jane cries, I cry, but that particular moment always gets me the most.”

—lisafbraun

Artisan Entertainment

“Her performance gets me every time. The speech to her son when she talks about how lonely she is and how futile the daily tasks are is so real and so touching. Understated and beautiful.”

—rhiank2

Roadshow Entertainment

“When she’s telling her ‘friends’ that she’s not nothing. Every time I see it, it makes me want to simultaneously cry my heart out along with her and give her a massive hug.”

—little_v

Warner Bros.

“When he was with the two girls. Oh my god no, I cannot watch that film because I know I will bawl like a baby just watching him cry.”

—m4097053be

Warner Bros. Television Distribution

“When Sam had to kill his werewolf girlfriend (the first girl he loved) after his would-be fiance was killed. He looks back at Dean as he goes to kill her and the look of absolute heartbreak is like a kick in the nuts.”

“Also, when Dean is hit with a memory curse and loses his memory. He looks in the mirror and repeats information about his life friends and family and his eyes well up as you can see him losing the memories – absolutely devastating.”

—clairetasmic

Netflix

“The moment when Ruth and Debbie finally let out all the hurt they’ve caused each other and argue in the hospital is heartbreaking. But Ruth just sat on the hospital bed sobbing into her hands is just so raw and real. It’s honestly mind-blowing and kills me every rewatch.”

—amyi4117d500c

15. Rami Malek as Elliot in Mr. Robot

USA Network

“Especially in the episode when Krista helps him find out about his childhood. Every time he cries I end up feeling so bad for him to the point I feel like hugging him, especially because of the huge amount of trauma he endured.”

—tanyam44ab2253d

Showtime

“She absolutely gets me every time. Particularly when she gave her mom the monologue on what a bad parent she is. Every one of her performances was mindblowing and she deserved so many awards, I will die on this hill.”

—repumore

“When Fiona confronted Monica about how she failed at being her mother and how Fiona was the one raising her younger siblings all these years.”

—chillmagazine10

Paramount Pictures

“I could have chosen various Viola Davis roles, but her iconic cry in Fences is an example of an actor going full cry. None of this unrealistic cutesy crying, Viola really makes you feel the pain and emotion of her situation. Best. Crier. Ever.”

–casualgem30

Amazon Prime Video

“This was definitely more of a subtle cry, but the combination of the tears in his eyes with his delivery of the line ‘If you blow this Midge, I swear, you will break my fucking heart’ was so emotional and powerful.”

–bundtcake12

Paramount Pictures

“At the end, when she can hear Sam for the first time after his death. The tears just start to spill over, but she keeps her composure and her eyes open because she doesn’t want to miss a single thing. It gets me ugly crying every single time. I’m tearing up just thinking about it.”

—witchyribbon84

Sony Pictures Releasing

“Both when he’s sleeping in the public bathroom with his son, and when he gets the job at the end. Kills me every time!”

—oliviahasbde

—imgracekim

Warner Bros. Pictures

“When Ron is reunited with his family and finds out that Fred has died it’s so emotional. The moment Ron and George hugged and sobbed together, I ugly cried. Their acting was phenomenal in that scene and isn’t appreciated enough.”

“Every single time she cried I was blubbering along with her. The most notable was her impassioned impromptu speech at the height of the riot where she cut Judy King off and spoke from the heart.”

–emmahadleyuk

“Particularly in the scene with Sun where he sobs in his adorable onesie. In multiple scenes throughout the series, Miguel Ángel Silvestre is a master at both bringing comedic relief, and at provoking deeper emotions through his weeping.”

—bundtcake12

27. Anthony Hopkins as C.S. Lewis in Shadowlands

United International Pictures

“After his wife, Joy, has died and he’s talking with her young son who says he misses her, Lewis says ‘so do I’ and wraps him in his arms and they weep. Nobody could stay dry-eyed watching that.”
