Paul McCartney Announces New Retrospective Podcast On His Extensive Library Of Lyrics
The world has known Paul McCartney to be behind a mic for decades. The former Wings frontman will soon make his way behind the mic for a podcast!
The decades since McCartney ruled the world as a member of ‘The Fab Four’ have been kind to the 81-year-old former Beatle.
Following the dissolution of arguably the biggest group of the 1960s, McCartney formed Wings with his then-wife Linda and made music history with the band for the next decade. Since 1970, McCartney has also released solo records and has worked with countless collaborators.
Now, he is ready to talk about his extensive lyrical library!
On Tuesday, “McCartney: A Life In Lyrics” was announced. The “My Love” singer will discuss several of his most beloved lyrical compositions in a podcast.
The Podcast Announcement Arrives A Year And A Half After The Release Of ‘The Lyrics: 1956 to the Present’
The new podcast isn’t the only recent examination of McCartney’s lyricism.
In 2021, McCartney collaborated with Paul Muldoon; McCartney spoke to Muldoon, a poet, in several sessions stretching many hours. Muldoon and McCartney took a look at the former Beatle’s treasure trove of lyrics during a five-year period. According to The Guardian, the duo clocked 50 hours of conversations, discussing 154 songs; Muldoon and McCartney met 24 times.
Muldoon Will Reunite With McCartney For The Upcoming Podcast
McCartney and Muldoon’s collaboration won’t end with Muldoon’s massive ode to McCartney’s songwriting.
Muldoon divulged details about the upcoming project in a new teaser trailer.
“When we listened back to the tapes, we realized there was something very special happening in these conversations,” the poet goes on to explain. “As we ventured out on this journey line by line, it became clear how much of McCartney’s biography is, indeed, embedded in the lyrics,” Muldoon continued, “going all the way back to his childhood in Liverpool [England.]”
Listeners can also hear a bit of McCartney’s insight in the trailer. He explains at the beginning, “I wanted to become a person who wrote songs and I wanted to be someone whose life was in music.”
When discussing the book, McCartney can be heard saying, “It was like going back to an old snapshot album, looking back on work I haven’t thought that much about for quite a few years.”
Muldoon goes on to introduce the podcast and describes it as “A masterclass, a memoir, [and] an improvised journey with one of the most iconic figures in popular music.”
Listeners will be able to dive into the podcast this fall when it will be released on September 20th. According to The Music Universe, the podcast will be available on a number of platforms, but those who are Pushkin+ subscribers will have the complete 24-episode collection all at once.
The outlet also reveals the episodes are broken up into two seasons, with season two’s release arriving early next year.
Season one features a look back at a combination of songs from The Beatles, Wings, and McCartney’s solo career, including “Here Today,” a track McCartney composed about the death of his longtime bandmate and beloved friend, John Lennon.
Lennon was murdered outside of his apartment in December of 1980, and McCartney released the song on his 1982 LP, “Tug Of War.”
