“The Ego On Him Is Truly Massive”: 26 Of The Nicest And Nastiest Celebrities People Have Ever Met

BuzzFeed Community members recently shared their most memorable celebrity encounter stories and dished on which celebs were exceptionally nice, and which fell flat. The comments filled with even more interesting celeb encounter stories, and Reddit user u/KingOfCranes also started an eye-opening thread of noteworthy celeb encounter stories. Here are some of the most compelling:

1. “While at an urgent care center in Beverly Hills, I met Ashton Kutcher. I was sick and stressed and couldn’t find the office. My anxiety took over (it was one of ‘those’ days), and I crumpled into a tiny ball on the floor and put my head in my hands. A moment later, someone tapped me on the shoulder and asked if I was okay. I looked up, and there was Ashton, pushing a stroller with his baby. He helped me up and walked with me to the doctor’s office. I wish I hadn’t been so sick during that encounter. Nevertheless, his kindness and warmth were deeply appreciated.”

2. “I met Julia Louis-Dreyfus in line for the Peter Pan ride at Disneyland. She was right in front of us with her kids, and it was clear she was on a family outing. This was right after Seinfeld had ended, and I was a huge fan of the show. I didn’t want to draw attention to her or anything, so I just smiled at her, and she smiled back. We ended up chatting about Disneyland and what rides we had been on. Just as she was getting on the ride, she turned around and smiled and winked at me. I’m convinced that was her way of saying thank you for not interrupting her day with her family. The friend I was with didn’t realize who she was and was like, ‘Awww, that lady was so nice!'”

3. “I went to LA a few months ago and attended Jimmy Kimmel Live! and The Late Late Show with James Corden as a live audience member. Jimmy Kimmel was very, very standoffish. He didn’t interact with us, the audience, AT ALL. He just flat-out pretended we weren’t there. Of course, he was super friendly to the celebrity guests as soon as the cameras turned on. After Kimmel being such a jerk, I was scared to be in Corden’s audience. I’d heard only BAD things about James Corden.”

“James Corden was the biggest sweetheart ever. He was so incredibly nice to the audience. He let us ask questions and conversed with us like he truly valued what we were saying and asking. Someone asked if he’d met any rude celebrities as a host, and he went on a sort of tangent about how you never know what someone’s going through, so he tries not to judge his guests based only on his own limited interactions with them. I’m sure, in a roundabout way, he was referring to himself and his own reputation, but his response was so genuine and kind.”

4. “Central Intelligence did some filming in Boston in my friend’s neighborhood. Apparently, Dwayne Johnson was so courteous and very fan-friendly. He loved interacting (offered up smiles and hugs, had conversations, the works), gave autographs, and made people smile when he had the time. Kevin Hart was a total jack*ss that didn’t want to be bothered. He went out of his way to make sure nobody talked to him or got near him, and he just had the worst holier-than-thou attitude.”

5. “I once spilled a very large, very colorful drink on Kate Hudson. My girlfriend and I ended up in a VIP area at a music festival totally by accident. We weren’t supposed to be there, but walked right in not knowing it was restricted. Since we were already there, we decided to stay. We ended up in a corner, as to not draw attention to ourselves, and I walked over to the bar occasionally to get us drinks and bring them back. A few hours and more than a few rounds later, my girlfriend decided she had to have a margarita in one of those plastic yard glasses, so I attempted to bring one back, along with a few beers, on my next trip.”

“I made it within 10 feet of where we where stationed when I sidestepped a dancing girl, tripped, and spilled the entire yard glass on a woman. When she turned around, I realized that the women I had just soaked was Kate Hudson. She was incredibly awesome about it, and luckily, my girlfriend had an extra shirt with her that she could change into.”

6. “I served Topher Grace at a karaoke spot in Austin that had private rooms. It was the cast of Predators, actually. They asked me if I sang, and I do. I sang ‘Brass in Pocket,’ and as soon as I started, Topher Grace grabbed the other mic and backed me up. He was super relaxed and quite fun. Side note: His voice goes up an octave when he’s excited, just like his character on That ’70s Show.”

7. “Oscar Isaac is a sweetheart. I saw the show he just did on Broadway (absolutely excellent, BTW), and he was so kind. He signed playbills for everyone after the show. Being in a play is exhausting, but he was still so nice and gracious to everyone. Also, he is GORGEOUS in person, just like you’d expect.”

8. “I met Gordon Ramsay in Cape Town years ago. He was at a bar, not a super fancy bar at that. I went up and said hello, half hoping he would call me a ‘donut’ or something, but he was really nice and asked how I was. I told him I loved his shows and recipes, and he offered to buy me a drink. Overall, he was a really nice man, and his demeanor was very calming. I felt at ease. I hope he is doing well.”

9. “I met Keegan-Michael Key backstage before a show once. I complimented him on his (at the time) new series. He took my hand in both of his hands, asked my name, and gave the sincerest thank you. Such a nice guy.”

10. “The first celebrity I ever met when I was a young boy was Liza Minnelli. I remember she had a big, furry coat and this little dog. The dog came over to play with me. She then came over and patted my head, telling my dad, ‘You have such a cute little boy.’ Very nice lady!”

11. “My niece is friendly with Ron Funches, the comedian. We mentioned to her that our daughter loved Trolls and his character in that movie (Cooper). He then proceeded to send my then-3-year-old a ‘voicemail’ from Cooper where he called her by name and said he had to go because it was almost hug time. It was a sweet, simple gesture that he didn’t have to do, but we still talk about it years later.”

12. “I work in the movie business and have met a ton of celebs, both professionally and just because I’ve lived in Hollywood for 10+ years. The nicest: Mindy Kaling. I have seen her half a dozen times over the years, and she’s constantly with her family and friends, smiling, having a good time, seeming to enjoy her life. My cousin is obsessed with her, and one time, we saw her out at brunch, and she looked hungover as hell. My cousin (so oblivious) marched right over, declared her love for Mindy, and asked for a pic. Mindy had zero makeup on, clearly didn’t want to, but she posed for the pic anyway, pasted a smile on, and told my cousin she was happy she was a fan. I always thought how cool it was she was nice even when it wasn’t a situation where she want to be approached.”

13. “I can confirm that Jared Leto sucks. I work for a radio station and have had to deal with him a couple times, and he was awful. The ego on him is truly massive, and he’s a gigantic creep.”

14. “I met Daniel Day-Lewis once. It was a very brief interaction, but he was very nice. We shook hands. He was nice to my mom, too, and asked if she was going to the afterparty (she wasn’t). It was at the Gresham Hotel in Dublin before the Gangs of New York premiere. At that same premiere, my mom shouted at Leonardo DiCaprio (not in a serious way, she’s very sweet), ‘Leo you’re late!’ and he was apologetic and even kissed her hand.”

15. “I know everyone feels like Liam Payne is super cringy now (and he can be), but back during One Direction times, as they were recording their final album, Liam came out to meet fans at 4:00 a.m. after being in the recording studio all day. He was patient, kind, so sweet, and took time to talk to each person and pose for as many pics as they wanted with him. It was one of the kindest celeb encounters I’ve ever had to this day.”

16. “My uncle met Harrison Ford once. He’s a helicopter mechanic and was doing repairs on one of his helicopters. He said he’s an incredibly nice and down-to-earth guy; he’s just very private. He took my uncle and some other people out to lunch as a thank you, and they went to this tiny restaurant in the middle of nowhere in New York. Apparently, he has a few out-of-the-way restaurants that he likes to go to where he won’t be bothered by paparazzi.”

17. “I used to work at Disney World and encountered many celebrities. Mariah Carey was a total pa monster. Firstly, she demanded that we hold the line out of sight while she and her party had a private go on the ride, then she demanded that we completely cycle out both ride machines and the line, which took over an hour since I worked at a very busy attraction. Then, when the kids in the party couldn’t ride because they were too short, she threw a tantrum (‘Do you know who I am?!’) as if it was a judgement call we were making, not literally a safety standard set by OSHA.”

18. “Peter Capaldi is an awesome human! My hubby and I met him at a convention in Toronto. While staff were rushing fans through, he still took the time to ask our names (he told me I share my name with his niece). You could tell he just wanted to talk to people. Absolutely lovely person. Our photo with him hangs right beside our daughter’s in our living room.”

19. “A few years ago, on a flight from NY to LA, I was upgraded to first class. The seats were two to a row, and I had the window seat. The man in front of me was also a single rider. Two girls came over to the area, and one of them was Michelle Trachtenberg. She said, ‘What the hell? We’re supposed to be seated together.’ Turned out her friend was supposed to be seated next to me, and she was in front of us. She was making a big deal about it when she was putting her luggage over head that finally I just asked if she wanted to switch seats (more because I was tired of her going on and on about it). That put a bit of a bad taste in my mouth, but she was really thankful and was nice and polite to the airline staff. Her skin was amazing, LOL.”

20. “About 30+ years ago, my sister and my friend surprised our moms by taking them to a Kenny Rogers concert. It was at a fairly small venue. Garth Brooks opened up for him, and we didn’t really know who he was. He came out to the lobby afterwards, and we spoke with him for a while. He was a sweetheart!”

21. “When I was 8 years old, one of my mom’s friends brought me with her to ‘bring your kid to work day’ at Paramount Studios. They had a whole tour and fun activities for us to do, and a bunch of fun experiences. Somehow, I got lost and separated from the group. I was scared and distraught, and I walked past this man smoking a huge cigar. I decided to turn around and ask him for help. I told him I was with the kids group and asked if he knew where they were. He said he didn’t know, but he knew there was a security booth nearby, and maybe they could help me find them! He offered me his hand, and said, C’mon, let’s go find your parent!’ So cringe at how trusting I was with this stranger at 8 years old! My mom gave me the stranger danger speech, and I failed her!”

“Anyway, I took his hand, and we walked to the security booth, and the officer there said, ‘Good afternoon, Mr. Sandler. How ya doin?’ I looked up at him again, and my jaw dropped. Adam Sandler was my hero that day! He spoke to the officer, and he told him where my group was scheduled to be at that time. Security offered to escort me there. When it finally clicked for me who he was, I got so excited and asked if he’d take me there, and he said, ‘Yeah! Let’s finish this little adventure we’ve been on together!’ He did, and when we got to the rest of the group, he stayed and signed autographs for me and all the kids and took a group photo with all of us. It’s still my favorite celeb encounter to this day.”

22. “I’ve met Henry Winkler on several occasions, and I can confirm he is one of the nicest, sweetest, and most considerate people in Hollywood. He realized I was struggling with talking and asked if I was deaf, and when I said I was, he went straight into signing with me just to make me feel more comfortable. I’ve met a LOT of celebrities, and most of them I regret meeting. But Henry is not only one of the best celebrities I’ve ever met, but one of the sweetest humans I’ve ever met. Absolute gem of a human.”

23. “I met Murr from Impractical Jokers just as they were about to start filming a challenge in Union Square. I just shouted out, ‘Yo Murr!’ and waved. One of the producers tried to shush me and get me to walk away so I didn’t ruin anything, but Murr waved me over and let me take a quick picture with him before they started. He was super nice and happy to meet a fan.”

24. “I have two. The first was Jerry Springer. I met him while traveling when we happened to be staying at the same hotel. He was super nice, took photos, and answered questions. He was all smiles and jokes. The second was Steven Spielberg. I met him at some benefit I got invited to as a teen because I had good grades or something. Not only did he have a super normal conversation with me, but when I told him where I really wanted to work (but hadn’t been able to get an interview), he took me to the next table where the company’s CEO was and introduced me. I worked there for five years after.”

25. “I met Sacha Baron Cohen while picking up lunch for my office. I work in film and TV production, so I’m not easily flustered by celebrities, but there are a few that transform me into an AAA battery trying to contain the power of the sun. I normally don’t bother celebrities, but he is one of my all-time comedy idols, and I knew I might not ever have another opportunity. After loading up my car with my order and realizing he was finished with his meal, I worked up the courage to walk over and say something before quickly making what would likely be an undignified retreat.”

“Very poorly holding it together, I told him I was an enormous fan, and he stopped and talked to me for a few minutes. He asked me about my life, what I do, etc. After telling him I was working on a show at one of the studios nearby, he introduced me to his producer who he was having lunch with and had me give him all my contact info in case they shot anything in Los Angeles. I honestly have never been more pumped about anything in my life. I was riding the biggest high and grinning like an absolute moron all day.”

26. Finally: “I met Tony Hawk in the late ’90s. He came to our local skatepark for a demo, but it was a tiny indoor park, and he couldn’t do much. After skating for a bit to appease the crowd, he snuck out the back across the parking lot to the bowling alley. Two friends and I followed him. He invited us to bowl with him, bought us chicken tenders and french fries, and talked about skateboarding with us for over an hour. Honestly, he was one of the coolest guys I’ve ever met.”

“Fast-forward 20 years, and I got to meet him again at our local skatepark unveiling that his foundation helped pay for, and man, he was just as cool. We chatted for a bit at the water fountain, and I mentioned that, as a kid, he treated me and friends to chicken tenders and french fries at the bowling alley. He was like, ‘Oh, in Amity, CT? Wasn’t the skatepark called B17?’ I was simply floored. He went on to explain that he was having a rough day that day and just hanging with three kids, bowling, and talking about skateboarding made him realize just how great life was. Thank you for everything you have ever done for skateboarding, Tony!”
