Moises Caicedo incredible stats show why Liverpool need to beat Chelsea to £111m star

Moises Caicedo was expected to become a Liverpool player today.

Reports on Friday morning claimed the Reds had agreed a British record breaking £111million deal with Brighton & Hove Albion for the central-midfielder. Caicedo was set to travel to Liverpool for his medical, but reports now state the Ecuadorian is angling for a move to Chelsea instead.

That has not stopped Liverpool supporters from imagining what their new-look midfield could have looked like for the 2023/24 season if they managed to sign Caicedo as the midfield anchor, alongside summer signings Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai.

And they certainly had a reason to be excited, with the highly-sought after 21-year-old’s stats showing a significant improvement on last season’s midfielders.

Club legends Fabinho, 29, and Jordan Henderson, 33, have both decided to move to pastures new in Saudi Arabia. The duo were a shadow of their former selves last season, with age seemingly catching up with them as Liverpool’s midfield was overrun too regularly for Jurgen Klopp’s liking.

Caicedo would have presented a clear upgrade on the veteran duo. In terms of passing, the Brighton man registered more passes completed (1961), chances created (43), through balls attempted (11) and forward passes (545) than his predecessors in the Premier League last season.

Do you think Moises Caicedo can become the best holding midfielder in the Premier League? Let us know in the comments section.

On top of that, he is better in the air despite being just 5ft10in tall. He won 37 aerial duels last season, more than Henderson’s 11 and Fabinho’s 30. His success rate of 64% was also higher than the 52% and 59% they managed, respectively.

Those figures, along with his proficiency at reading the game, intercepting opposition counters and age, provide a glimpse into why Klopp is willing to splurge such a huge sum to beat Chelsea to Caicedo.

However, with Caicedo now having expressed a preference to join Chelsea over the Reds, a move to Anfield is in significant doubt.
