Daniel Sturridge has joined Sky Sports’ team of pundits ahead of the new season – and will be on duty when two of his old clubs collide.

Sturridge, 33, who last played for Australian side Perth Glory, is best known for his spells with Chelsea and Liverpool, who meet at Stamford Bridge on Sunday in the game of the weekend. Sadly, he never quite fulfilled his potential due to a succession of injuries.

The two-time Champions League made a number of appearances on Sky last season and has now officially joined the broadcaster, meaning he will work regularly the likes of Gary Neville, Roy Keane and Jamie Carragher.

“The Premier League season kicks off tonight and I am excited to be a part of it all with Sky Sports," said Sturridge in a Sky press release.

“I’m looking forward to using my experience on the pitch and bringing this insight to the fans watching at home. It is set to be an exciting season ahead and it’s great to be part of the Sky Sports team bringing you all the action.”

The announcement received a mixed response from fans, with many jokingly asking if he will be ruled out by injury.

One fan complained: “Some fall from grace Sky over the last few years. Yet it’s more expensive than ever.”

Meanwhile, an Arsenal fan queried: “Have you got a regular Arsenal pundit yet? You now have Carragher & Sturridge (Liverpool), Neville & Keane (United) & Richards (City). I know you have Smudger [Alan Smith] on commentary but he's very good at being impartial but he's rarely part of the punditry.”
