Chelsea have pulled out of a deal to sign Tyler Adams at the last minute despite agreeing to pay the Leeds midfielder's £20m release clause.

It follows news the London club are trying to fund a mega money move for Moises Caicedo in order to beat Liverpool to his signature.

The Reds sensationally hijacked Chelsea's swoop after submitted a staggering £111m bid for the Brighton midfielder on Thursday, which was immediately accepted, but the Blues haven't given up hope and are reportedly planning to match or even top Liverpool's bid.

As such, they need to free up some funds and are now expected to use the £20m they intended to spend on Adams and use it to bid for Caicedo.

Caicedo has told Liverpool he wants to move to Chelsea, having agreed personal terms with the club back in May, and it's understood he and his agent are still in London waiting for the Stamford Bridge club to agree a deal with Brighton.

Liverpool had booked a medical for the 21-year-old and were hoping to have the move finalised before the weekend, but are now resting their hopes on Chelsea being unable to match their offer.

Adams, meanwhile, is expected to head back Leeds, and could take part in the club's Championship clash with Birmingham tomorrow.

News of the Adams deal collapsing is the latest twist in one of the most incredible transfer sagas of the summer. Chelsea have been locked in talks with Brighton over a move for Caicedo for months, while Liverpool have spent the majority of the summer going after Southampton's Romeo Lavia.

Then, Liverpool suddenly changed tack and gazumped Chelsea's bid, offering a British record fee for the Ecuadorian, despite baulking at Dortmund's £100m asking price for Jude Bellingham (he ended up moving to Real Madrid for just £89m, though the fee could rise to £114m in add-ons) earlier in the year.
