Per ESPN, Forte’s removal from the field came after an early Saturday workout; owner Mike Repole and trainer Todd Pletcher were “seen meeting with a state racing commission veterinarian afterward.”

The withdrawal of Forte’s is only the most recent at this year’s Derby. On Thursday, Practical Move and Continuar were taken out of the race due to both having elevated temperatures. The following day, Skinner was scratched due to an elevated temperature as well.

Earlier this week, Wild on Ice, a scheduled Derby participant, was euthanized following a leg injury. Lord Miles was scratched after two other horses owned by Saffie Joseph Jr. — Parents Pride and Chasing Artie — also died this week.

In a statement, officials at Churchill Downs described the numerous deaths as “completely unacceptable” while noting, “We take this very seriously and acknowledge that these troubling incidents are alarming and must be addressed.”

In total, five horses scheduled to run in the Derby have been scratched, which ESPN reports as being “the first time since 1936 that many horses have been pulled from the race.”

According to ESPN, Forte was the favorite at 4-1 before being removed from the field. Tapit Trice and Angel of Empire became co-favorites at 9-2 once news of Forte’s removal became public.
