Ex-NFL ace said family from Oscar-winning film lied about his adoption and made millions

Former NFL star Michael Oher stunned the world after claiming Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy didn't officially adopt him and instead made millions from the movie, 'The Blind Side'.

The 37-year-old's life was subject of the Oscar-winning film which followed his life from an impoverished upbringing to when he was adopted by the Tuohy's on his journey to becoming an NFL player.

Regularly regarded as one of the greatest sports films ever, the ex-Super Bowl champion claimed the feel-good story is a lie after claiming the family tricked him into signing away the legal authority to use his name in business deals after turning 18 years old, according to ESPN.

Oher filed a lawsuit against the Tuohy's and claimed they placed him in a conservatorship rather than adopting him to earn millions for themselves and their children in the form of royalties of the film which earned $309million (£242million) at the box office.

After becoming a college football star at Ole Miss, Oher was drafted in 2009 by the Baltimore Ravens where he went on to win the Super Bowl in 2012.

He spent seven years in the NFL and in 2015, the former offensive tackle admitted that he didn't like the successful film.

In the latest update of the legal saga, the Tuohy's have pushed back and claimed that Oher has repeatedly attempted to shake down the couple for $15m (£11m).

The couple’s attorney, Martin D. Singer, released a statement regarding the 37-year-old's claims and said the couple "loved" him like a son.

“Anyone with a modicum of common sense can see that the outlandish claims made by Michael Oher about the Tuohy family are hurtful and absurd,” Singer said Wednesday (August 16) in a statement to The Times.

"The notion that a couple worth hundreds of millions of dollars would connive to withhold a few thousand dollars in profit participation payments from anyone — let alone from someone they loved as a son — defies belief."
