Jurgen Klopp takes veiled dig at Chelsea with ‘normal club’ remark after Caicedo saga

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has taken a swipe at Chelsea after he was questioned on the Reds’ transfer pull this summer.

It’s been a week to forget for Klopp, who saw Moises Caicedo incredibly reject Liverpool in a push to force a £115million move to Chelsea instead, whilst seeing fellow engine room target Romeo Lavia also head to Stamford Bridge for £58m.

It’s a huge blow to a Liverpool side that has seen a midfield revamp this summer with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita and James Milner leaving the club at the end of their contracts, while club captain Jordan Henderson and Fabinho have both headed to Saudi Arabia.

And given the Brazilian’s influence at Anfield since he arrived from Monaco in 2018, a seamless transition in the holding midfield role was needed, but it’s been the complete opposite for Liverpool.

Given the disappointment in failing to land Caicedo or Lavia, Klopp responded to questions over Liverpool’s pull in the transfer window and he couldn’t help but take a ‘normal club’ dig at Chelsea.

He said: “Everything is more difficult, there are reasons and you all know them. Some clubs just have a different way to do it. As a normal club, it’s really difficult to catch up with them. It’s just how it is.”

But the boss would have seen his mood lifted by the £16.2m signing of Stuttgart captain and Japan international Wataru Endo, who could be tasked with filling the void left by Fabinho at the base of midfield.

He’s the Reds' third summer signing after Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister arrived at Anfield last month and both started the opening day draw away at Chelsea.
