The TV favourite has been in the village since 2006 but it's now said that he'll be leaving the Yorkshire set for pastures new after feeling "ready for a change".

Matthew, 43, has told friends that he's "bored" with the plotlines he's been having in recent months.

A TV source told The Sun that he wants to "see what else is out there" after "not getting any gritty storylines".

They added: "He's excited about the opportunities available. He's only just announced he is leaving so scriptwriters are working out his on-screen exit. It's possible David could be killed off."

At the time of the investigation, they had been filming a plot which saw Victoria go over a waterfall, allowing them both to have some time off-screen while the probe was conducted.

In other gruelling storylines, David was involved for a time with murder Meena Jutla, making Victoria one of her prime targets, though Victoria managed to make it out alive.

Away from the soap, Matthew tied the knot with his co-star Charley Webb, who played Debbie Dingle in 2018, having previously dated in 2007 and welcoming a child together.

They split briefly, but upon rekindling their romance welcomed a further two children.

Charley quit the show last year and has since focused on her family while taking part in other gigs, including the UK tour of James Graham's Quiz.

The exact date Matthew will wrap up filming is yet to be confirmed.
