Bruno Fernandes ’embarrassed’ after Man Utd captain’s jaw-dropping miss

Bruno Fernandes was labelled "embarrassing" after he spurned a glorious chance for Manchester United against Tottenham.

The Red Devils captain beat Spurs' offside trap to get on the end of Luke Shaw's cross during the first half in north London, finding himself with plenty of space on the edge of the six-yard box.

But he somehow failed to get his header on target, instead sending the effort high and wide. After turning to the linesman with a sheepish look on his face and realising he was onside, Fernandes put his hands to his mouth in shock.

Fans slammed him on social media afterwards, with one tweeting: "Actually embarrassing how Bruno missed that." Another predicted: "Miss of the season already."

A third questioned: "How did Bruno miss from there? He should be finishing it ffs." And a fourth commented: "What a miss from Bruno Fernandes. Onside, unmarked, goal at his mercy – and heads well off target. Dear me."

"Bruno Fernandes has just missed the biggest sitter of the gameweek, free header from six yards out. Shocking," fumed a fifth, while a sixth joked: "Ten Hag’s a better man than me. I’d be taking Bruno off instantly after that miss."

Is it the miss of the season so far? Let us know if there's another in the comments section.

To add insult to injury for Fernandes, he was then booked minutes later for protesting referee Michael Oliver's decision to show team-mate Antony a yellow card for a foul on Yves Bissouma.

Neither side could find a breakthrough in a lively first half at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The hosts hit the woodwork twice in quick succession before the break.

Pedro Porro rattled Andre Onana's crossbar with a rasping strike from outside the box before a subsequent low cross deflected up off of Shaw and onto the post.
