Frank Sinatra and Doug Sanders had plenty in common.

A love for golf, a love for music, a love for parties, a love for women, the list is endless. However, when 82-year-old Sanders eventually departs this earth, he will surely quote his good friend’s iconic song – ‘I did it my way.’

He certainly has. Sanders cruelly missed out on a PGA World Title, but he did record 20 tour wins, 13 top 10s in Majors, and four runner-up finishes: two in the British Open, one in the PGA Championship and the US Open. However, he is best known for taking his unique blend of flamboyant garishness and womanising cheekiness onto the course.

When the two ultimate character traits are combined, you are left with the bright coloured wearing, driver smashing, hip-swinging character that was Sanders. It certainly has been a ride.

During a fascinating interview with The Scotsman, Sanders was asked about the mischief he got up to as a youngster. What better place to start than the time he lost his virginity. In a ditch. At the age of 11-years-old. “It was on the way back from the course,” the now 82-year-old laughed. She was the pro. What can I tell ya? I enjoyed it and just kept doing it.”

He certainly did keep doing it. His radar spotted beautiful women with military precision and his charm yielded maximum results. Combined with his eye-popping swagger, charming charisma, and lethal abilities on the course, he was one of the sport’s most ultimate playboys.
