Two elite runners fall just metres from finish line – and both miss out on gold medals

The Netherlands agonisingly saw two gold medals slip from their fingers in less than half an hour at the World Athletics Championships.

It was hoped to be a successful opening night in Budapest on Saturday (August 19) for the Dutch, who had double Olympic champion Sifan Hassan running in the 10,000km final.

She was ahead with just 25m to go but seemingly collided with Ethiopia's Gudaf Tsegay, who went on to claim victory while she ended up on the floor with a bloodied knee.

In a bizarre turn of events, the Dutch then suffered the exact same fate in the next track event, the 4x400m mixed relay. Finisher Femke Bol looked to have the win wrapped up, but she lost her footing and also decked it.

Bol managed to get back up and cross the line in third, but because she'd dropped the baton it was again no medal for her nation after what looked to a guaranteed gold.

Hassan felt she'd been impeded in her race, telling BBC Sport: "I got pushed. The girl was running on the outside and I get blocked. But, what can you do? It is sport, it can happen.

Is this the worse sporting luck you've ever seen? Let us know in the comments section.

"If anybody can out that sort of bad luck behind them then it is Sifan Hassan. She is very good at seeing the bigger picture. She is very rare and will be able to put her head on the pillow and come back and put all of that into the next race."

Her fellow pundit Michael Johnson added: "Sifan Hassan felt the contact and I think she tried to adjust her stride. That's what caused her to fall. You can't adjust your stride when you're moving at that speed and you're fatigued."

Bol, meanwhile, was perplexed at her incident. She said: "To be honest I don't have a clue. I've had it once before. I went to go and I'm really sorry for my team.

"I should finish it off. I have tired legs, think I've had worse tired legs. It happened and it sucks big time."
