When you hear the name Ian Rapoport, you probably automatically brace yourself for breaking football news. But that will be different this weekend when the NFL Network insider will be associated with — a racehorse?

That’s right. Rapoport — along with Fox Sports’ Joy Taylor and Lindsay Czarniak — is the minority owner of Jace’s Road, a three-year-old colt set to race in the 149th Kentucky Derby this Saturday.

As the veteran football reporter told America’s Best Racing, the whole journey started with attending the Derby with his wife for their wedding anniversary in 2019. That turned into the Rapoports acquiring a stake in three horses, including Jace’s Road.

“We’ve always felt connected to horses we like, but this connection feels much deeper. This changes things,” Rapoport told ABR. “The Derby is always the best, our favorite weekend of the year. But to have our own horse likely running in it is wild. We always root for our favorites, but now we’ll really have our horse in it. The buildup, which is my favorite part, will be so much more intense. And man, imagine if he goes off and places. I just can’t even imagine.”

It really would be something if Jace’s Road places, too. The colt is a 50-1 longshot to win the Run for the Roses on Saturday. But, as Rapoport mentions, long odds didn’t stop last year’s Kentucky Derby winner from shocking the world.

“He’s 50-1,” Rapoport told Front Office Sports. “Probably not going to win. But I was at the Derby last year when Rich Strike (an 80-1 longshot) won. Anything can happen. So who knows?”

Official: Our horse Jace’s Road will run out of post position 12 in @KentuckyDerby. Not exactly a favorite, but definitely my favorite. Read about our guy from @westpointtbred https://t.co/9fZlTAkefv and all the others in this Cheat Sheet from @ABRLive https://t.co/sf09eHNJXt

Jace’s Road will race out of post position 12 at Churchill Downs on Saturday. Three past Kentucky Derby winners have raced out of post No. 12 according to Covers, although the last winner was Canonero II in 1971.

Post time for the 149th Kentucky Derby is 6:57p.m. ET.
