Netflix Officially Announces Squid Game Season 2

Given that it was the most successful TV series Netflix has yet brought to screens, we've known a second season was at the very least high on the company's To Do list, even as creator Hwang Dong-Hyuk demurred about the idea. Yet he's been working on the concept for a while and, in what is surely the least surprising announcement made in ages, Netflix has greenlit the second season.

The series, for the three people who didn't watch it, followed down-on-their-luck players offered the chance to win a big cash prize by competing in lethal versions of childhood games such as Tug of War.

"It took 12 years to bring the first season of Squid Game to life last year. But it took 12 days for Squid Game to become the most popular Netflix series ever,” reads a statement letter from Hwang. "As the writer, director and producer of Squid Game a huge shout out to fans around the world. Thank you for watching and loving our show."

He goes on to tease some elements for the new season, including the return of central protagonist Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) and masked antagonist the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun). Oh, and we'll be meeting the boyfriend of Young-hee, the giant killer animatronic doll from the Red Light, Green Light game. We can only imagine how dangerous he is…

Right now, the series won't return for a while, at least not before the end of next year or early 2024. And the new season is not the only project that Hwang is working on…
