Gymnast Nastia Liukin is again being skinny-shamed by fans due to her small size.

The Russian-born former American artistic gymnast used a safety pin to secure her pants at the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit launch party last week. Although some fans loved the clever fashion hack, other followers commented on her size.

Although not all fans could agree with using a safety pin to secure her fans, many did love her outfit, which consisted of a colorful long-sleeve top and baggy blue pants. She accessorized her look with a light blue purse and three looping gold chain necklaces.

In the caption, she wrote, “Here’s a styling hack to tailor any pant with just ONE safety pin. Recreating the look I wore to @si_swimsuit launch week!” She also included a long string of hashtags including #stylinghacks, #instagramfashion, and #safetypinhack.

Although some fans were impressed by the hack, not everyone was. “Or you could buy pants that fit? I don’t know if using a safety pin is a ‘styling hack,’” one user commented. “I love your love for gymnastics, but I dislike your body dysmorphia and priorities. There’s more to life than diamonds, makeup, and weight,” another netizen wrote.

“So that’s what you do when a size 8 in little kids doesn’t fit anymore?” another user asked. “Or you could eat some food,” another netizen commented. “No one in the world has this problem,” another user wrote. “All I’m saying is that I’m pretty sure that you can afford a tailor. So why are you using safety pins?” another netizen asked.

Fans Push Back Against Negative Comments: ‘Why All Of The Body Shaming?!’

Despite the critical comments, there were some fans that stood up for the five-time Olympic champion. “Why all of the body shaming?!” one fan asked. “Wow, all these negative comments! Thanks for the tip for us smaller girls,” another follower wrote. “Women come in all shapes and sizes. I hate seeing all of the body shaming,” a third fan chimed in.

“People, she’s an Olympic gymnast athlete. She’s strong and healthy. If you don’t appreciate that, move along, no need to criticize,” another follower wrote. “Don’t listen to the haters,” another fan shared. “These comments are awful,” another follower agreed. “She’s an athlete. Of course, she’s going to be slim!!” another fan exclaimed.

“To the people who comment incessantly about how Nastia shouldn’t be posting pictures of her body, especially because she is an influencer: Are you are aware that the reason a person becomes an influencer is due in large part to the number of followers they have?” another user asked.

“If you feel that someone is consistently promoting something you don’t agree with, you can very easily stop following them, which will not only save you from seeing content that upsets you but will also decrease said person’s status as an influencer,” they continued. “It’s that easy – unless, of course, your sole reason for continuing to follow a person is to continuously leave negative comments about something that is very obviously a recurring theme in their posts, in which case perhaps you need to check in on your own health – even if not physical, maybe mental.”
