Bears OC hints that QB Justin Fields could be nearing breakout

Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getsy indicated that quarterback Justin Fields is closer to becoming the face of the franchise. Per Colleen Kane of the Chicago Tribune, during a Saturday news conference, Getsy said, “Where he was at last year to this time to where he is now, I think he’s just light-years ahead.”The continued improvement of former first-round pick Fields is an encouraging sign for Chicago, because he flashed enormous potential during the 2022-23 campaign. In 15 games, the dual-threat dynamo rushed 1,143 yards — seventh in the NFL and second-most for a QB in league history. To become a premier franchise player in earnest, though, Fields must improve his accuracy. He completed just 60.4 percent of his passes last season, second-to-last in the league. Yet on that front, he has been proactive.According to the Tribune, in a Friday news conference, Bears head coach Matt Eberflus noted that Fields has made “big strides” regarding his footwork, which should in turn help to refine his touch and hopefully his accuracy.Fields has more targets to rely on in the fall than at any previous point in his young career, because earlier this offseason, Chicago traded for WR D.J. Moore and signed TE Robert Tonyan in free agency. Other quarterbacks have reached the next level amid similar circumstances. For example, Bills QB Josh Allen only completed 55.8 percent of his passes through his first two seasons. However, former Bills OC Brian Daboll kept developing Allen and the team ultimately acquired Stefon Diggs from Minnesota in 2020.Consequently, over the past three seasons, Allen has completed 65.2 percent of his passes and turned himself into a perennial MVP candidate.  If Fields progresses along similar lines to Allen, the Bears could be on track to vie for their first NFC North title since 2018.
