On Nov. 19, 2018, Goff — then a member of the Los Angeles Rams — led his team into a much-hyped showdown against Mahomes and the Chiefs. Both teams entered the 9-1 and the game didn’t disappoint.

Los Angeles won 54-51 in the only game in NFL history with both teams scoring over 50 points. Goff was 31-of-49 for 413 yards and four touchdowns. Mahomes was 33-of-46 for 478 yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions.

Since then, Goff and Mahomes have been on different trajectories. While Goff led the Rams to the Super Bowl that season, their 13-3 loss to the Patriots marked the beginning of the end of the QB’s time in L.A. He was traded to Detroit on Mar. 18, 2021.

Mahomes, meanwhile, won the Super Bowl the following season and did so again in February. If one of the two QBs were to replicate their 2018 performance, it would be him.

The Lions have a difficult assignment in Week 1 but the NFL’s decision to prop them up on primetime to begin the season is the biggest sign yet of how far Detroit has come under head coach Dan Campbell.

It wasn’t long ago that Detroit was the joke of the NFL. With some defensive improvements in 2023, the Lions should make the playoffs in a weak NFC.

Detroit’s ranked fourth in total offense a season ago, averaging 380 yards per game. Goff had his best season since 2018.

2018: 364-of-561 (64.9 percent), 4,688 yards, 32 touchdowns and 12 interceptions

2022: 382-of-587 (65.1 percent), 4,438 yards, 29 touchdowns and seven interceptions

The Lions were last in total defense, allowing 392.4 yards. They ranked in the bottom three against the pass and run.

Detroit invested in its defense this offseason, signing defensive backs Cameron Sutton, Emmanuel Mosely and CJ Gardner-Johnson in free agency while also selecting linebacker Jack Campbell in the first round (18th overall) during the 2023 NFL Draft.

Edge rushers Aidan Hutchinson and James Houston IV will be a good litmus test for a Kansas City offensive line that underwent reconstruction this offseason. Offensive tackles Orlando Brown Jr., Andrew Wylie and backup Geron Christian left in free agency and the Chiefs signed Donovan Smith and Jawaan Taylor to be their starters.

Smith was a liability at times for the Buccaneers last season. He allowed 39 pressures and was flagged 12 times, per data from Pro Football Focus. Taylor played for the Jaguars and was much stronger, only allowing 16 pressures.

The additions on both sides will play a major role when the two teams meet but all eyes will be on the two quarterbacks with the hope that the second act is as good as the first.
