2023 Detroit Lions schedule analysis

On Thursday night, the NFL released the complete Lions schedule. Per NFL research, Lions opponents had a 143-146-0 record in 2022, making their 2023 schedule the 13th-easiest in the league.

Circle the date: Week 1 @ Kansas City Chiefs (Sept. 7)

Every team in the NFL has Week 1 circled on their calendar, but for the Lions, this year’s opener should hit differently. Once shunned from the national spotlight, the Lions will start the season against the defending Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs in the NFL’s Thursday night showcase to kick off the 2023 campaign.

The Lions have a golden opportunity to show who they are from the jump on a huge stage. And who knows, with a good showing, they could potentially spoil the reigning champs’ celebration. One can only imagine the hype train that would get behind the Lions if they were to stun the Chiefs on opening night.

Getting off to a good start will be crucial for the Lions. In 2022, the Lions finished the season strong, winning eight of their final 10 games. However, finishing 9-8, the Lions barely missed out on the postseason partly due to a sluggish 1-6 start.

There’d be no better way to start the season than with an improbable win over the Chiefs, which could propel the Lions to even greater things in 2023.

Toughest stretch: Week 13 to Week 18

The Lions enter the 2023 campaign with high expectations. If they meet those expectations, the final six weeks of the regular season could ultimately decide their postseason fate.

Following two challenging late-season road tilts against the New Orleans Saints and division-rival Chicago Bears, the Lions will host a hopefully improved Denver Broncos with Russell Wilson in tow.

Over the final three weeks, Detroit will take on the defending NFC North champion Minnesota Vikings twice, in Week 16 and Week 18.

Smashed between their pivotal division matchups with the Vikings is another tough road game against Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys on Saturday in Week 17.

Easiest stretch: Week 3 to Week 6

If the Lions are going to return to the postseason, they’ll have to win the games they’re supposed to. From Week 3 to Week 6, the Lions will likely be favorites if not heavy ones, and they must take advantage.

Over the four-game stretch, the Lions will face the Atlanta Falcons, Green Bay Packers, Carolina Panthers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, which could all be playing young and inexperienced quarterbacks.

The Falcons and Desmond Ridder will come to Detroit, where the Lions have won three straight against Atlanta.

The trip to Lambeau Field is always a difficult one. But this time around, Jordan Love will be behind center for the Packers, not Aaron Rodgers.

Meanwhile, the Lions will look to avenge a loss to the Panthers last season by taking care of either No. 1 overall pick C.J. Stroud or veteran journeyman Andy Dalton.

The stretch ends in Week 6 at Tampa Bay, where the Lions lost by 40 the last time they played there in 2020. However, Tom Brady was throwing touchdowns to Rob Gronkowski that day, and it’s unlikely that Baker Mayfield or Kyle Trask will victimize the Lions similarly.

Through five games, the Lions will be: 4-1

While a miraculous upset over the Chiefs in the Thursday night opener would be nice, it’s probably not in the cards for the Lions. Although, the Lions will avoid getting off to a slow start again in 2023.

After a valiant effort, albeit in a loss, to the Chiefs in Week 1, the Lions will take frustrations on their next four opponents, the Seattle Seahawks, Falcons, Packers and Panthers.

In 2022, only the Seahawks finished with a winning record (9-8), while the Falcons, Packers and Panthers went a combined 22-29.
