Coronation Street fans were introduced to a brand new character this month as part of Paul Foreman’s Motor Neurone Disease (MND) storyline – but this isn’t her first time on a soap opera set.

Shelly Rossington, played by Natalie Amber, made her first appearance on the ITV soap earlier this month when Paul attended his first MND support group meeting.

Although Paul didn’t stick around for too long after it ended, he eventually ran into Shelly again at the hospital where they began to form a friendship.

Natalie first announced she had landed a role on the Coronation Street last month when she took to Instagram to share the good news online.

One user penned: “I was so thrilled to see if was you who’d got it! [three heart emojis]” as another echoed: “Congratulations! Just say watching it, recognised you immediately.”

Back in 2016, Natalie opened up about how she became a wheelchair user after suffering a gall which changed her life.

She’d been building her career as an actor and dancer in London at the time but was forced to take a break from the industry for a few years as she adjusted to her new way of life.

She told The Bolton News: “I suppose I always viewed disabled people much like many do – as a separate group generally unconnected to me.

“Now, I want to stop people pigeonholing them and instead view anyone with a disability as an individual, quite capable of doing anything – like taking on a variety of acting roles – because there are people with disabilities in all walks of life.”

Fans will have to stay tuned to see where her character’s storyline will develop on the cobbles over the next few weeks.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8pm on ITV1 or on ITVX
