Dominik Szoboszlai's father dreamed of his son becoming the next Ferenc Puskas – and went to extreme measures in order to guide him to superstardom.

Szoboszlai, who joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig for a deal worth in the region of £60million, captains the Hungary national side and already has 32 appearances to his name at the age of just 22.

The dynamic midfielder's influence has been likened to that of Puskas, the greatest Hungarian player in history who scored 84 times across his 85 caps between 1945 and 1956.

It has now been reported Szoboszlai's father wanted him to be nimble despite his eventual 6ft 1in frame – making him wear smaller boots to limit foot growth to a size seven.

"It’s a tip, a football hack, shall we say," The Athletic quoted a source as saying when talking about his father Zsolt's plan.

"Because if you have big feet, you can’t shoot the ball perfectly unless you are a player like (Zlatan) Ibrahimovic.

"To shoot the ball properly, you have to have long legs and smaller feet, and that’s why Dominik’s father was strict with him when he was younger. Just look at him now."
