Why Cowboys’ negotiations with this star could be complicated

The Dallas Cowboys and their fans must buckle in for what will likely be many important (and costly) contract extensions over the next two offseasons.

One name included in that mix is rising star cornerback Trevon Diggs, and there’s a very real reason to have a cautious outlook on his future in Dallas.

The 2020 second-round draft pick has become an integral part of the Cowboys’ defense, totaling 17 interceptions (11 in 2021) and 49 passes defensed over his first three NFL seasons. Thanks in large part to his ballhawk instincts, Diggs has established himself as one of the league’s top cornerbacks.

As for his contract, Diggs is currently under his rookie deal, which runs through the 2023 season. He addressed his contract recently, as The Athletic’s Jon Machota detailed, but didn’t sound optimistic.

“Hopefully something gets figured out,” Diggs said. “I love Dallas. I love being here. So, I don’t know. We’ll see.”

In 2022, Diggs allowed 673 receiving yards, a major improvement from 2021, a season in which he allowed the most of any player with 907.

The looming question for the Cowboys will be whether they want to open the checkbook for the projected amount Diggs may want.

Spotrac has the 2021 All-Pro cornerback’s current market value at just north of $15.45M per year. With WR CeeDee Lamb, OLB Micah Parsons, RB Tony Pollard, QB Dak Prescott and others in line for new deals sooner than later, it makes Diggs’ situation more complicated.

Owner Jerry Jones hasn’t shied away from paying elite players, but cornerbacks have been on a merry-go-round in recent years for the team. The Cowboys must figure how to make it work with Diggs, but it’s not going to be simple.
