Watch: Joel Embiid shares heartwarming moment with his son during MVP speech

On Friday, Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid did his best to keep the tears from flowing as he addressed the crowd at the Wells Fargo Center after receiving the 2022-23 MVP Award. But that changed when Embiid’s son, Arthur, ran onto the court.

After Embiid mentioned Arthur during his speech, the youngster came running onto the court, queuing the waterworks for the newly crowned MVP.

“Honestly, he’s the main reason why I’m really here,” Embiid said, via NBC Sports Philadelphia. “Becoming a father changed my whole life, and you know, I just want to show him a good example, and I’m glad he’s here with us.”

It’s been a long journey for Embiid, so seeing him tear up at the sight of his son was especially heartwarming. From Cameroon to Kansas, Embiid has defied the odds. After finishing as the runner-up to Denver Nuggets star Nikola Jokic the last two seasons, the Sixers big man finally has vindication.

Named MVP on Wednesday, the 29-year-old finished the regular season leading the NBA in scoring, averaging 33.1 points with 10.2 rebounds and 4.2 assists in 66 games.

While the MVP pursuit was important to Embiid, an NBA Title remains the ultimate goal. However, Embiid and the Sixers must get past the Boston Celtics to keep that dream alive.

After missing the Sixers’ improbable win over the Celtics in Game 1 with a sprained knee, Embiid returned for Game 2 but wasn’t as impactful as he might’ve hoped. Embiid was still nasty on the defensive end, finishing with five blocks, but offensively he scored only 15 points in a lopsided 121-87 loss to Boston.

The hope is Embiid can regain his form soon and help the Sixers get past the rival Celtics, who’ve been a thorn in the side of the MVP. Heading into Game 3, Embiid was 1-9 against the Celtics in the postseason.
