Yankees hurler not pleased with change in rehab plan

This week, the New York Yankees slowed Luis Severino’s rehab plan, which didn’t sit well with the right-handed starter.

Nursing a low-grade lat strain since spring training, Severino believes he is ready to make his first minor league rehab start in preparation for his eventual season debut. However, the Yankees have opted to have him throw what he called an “unnecessary” simulated game.

“They just want to control my pitches. I don’t know the real reason,” Severino told Meredith Marakovits of the YES Network. “But I just go with whatever they say.”

When asked by reporters on Sunday, manager Aaron Boone didn’t find much of a problem with Severino’s comments.

“He wants to pitch. He wants to get back here. He wants to get in the rotation,” Boone said via Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News. “He Feels good. So I just look at it as a competitor wanting to go.”

Severino said he had not felt any pain since around two weeks after the injury and believes he will have the same impact as always once he returns to the Yankees rotation.

While motivated to make his way back, Severino’s return to the Yankees may force him to do something he’s not too keen on — pitching in the morning. Severino is on track to make his first rehab start for the Scranton Wilkes Barre RailRiders on Wednesday, with a start time of 11:05 a.m. against the Omaha Storm Chasers.

“I think that’s like 11 something in the morning, so hopefully, we can do something to move that game,” Severino joked. “Whatever I need to do to get back sooner.”
