Are Obi-Wan & Anakin A Force Dyad? Kenobi Teases Major Star Wars Retcon
Warning: Spoilers for Obi-Wan Kenobi episode 4.
Although the concept of a Force dyad was not introduced until Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi hinted that Obi-Wan and Anakin Skywalker may have formed a dyad long before then. Taking place ten years after Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, Obi-Wan Kenobi centers on Obi-Wan finally facing his past during his years in exile. Much of Obi-Wan’s regret stems from his failure to teach and protect Anakin. And, although the former master and apprentice had a close relationship, Obi-Wan could not prevent Anakin from falling to the dark side of the Force.
Near the end of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Emperor Palpatine discovered that Rey and Kylo Ren formed a Force dyad or a bond that made two Force-sensitive beings “one” in the Force. This connection gave its members unique abilities, including communicating from light-years apart, seeing and feeling each other’s experiences, and even power over life itself. Since Force dyads were incredibly rare, Emperor Palpatine was surprised to learn that Rey and Kylo Ren shared this bond, stating that a Force dyad had been “unseen for generations.”
However, Obi-Wan Kenobi implies that there may have been another Force dyad before Rey and Kylo Ren: Obi-Wan and Anakin. At the beginning of Obi-Wan Kenobi episode 4, Obi-Wan and Darth Vader were in bacta tanks for healing on separate planets. During this time, both experienced the same sensations and remembered the same points in their recent battle. In addition, earlier in Obi-Wan Kenobi, Vader reacted when Obi-Wan learned of Anakin’s fate and said his name aloud for the first time. This suggests that Obi-Wan and Anakin had a special bond that allowed them to communicate and experience each other’s sensations over long distances – abilities only seen in Force dyads. While Obi-Wan and Anakin may have formed a Force dyad due to their relationship with each other and the Force, it probably went unnoticed because their connection was never fully developed.
Obi-Wan and Anakin may have been a Force dyad because they fit two of the most important characteristics of one. First, Obi-Wan and Anakin had a very close relationship before Anakin became Darth Vader. While many Jedi masters and apprentices cared about each other, Obi-Wan and Anakin were like family, with Obi-Wan being one of Anakin’s last connections to the light side. When forced to fight and nearly kill Anakin, Obi-Wan even shouted, “You were my brother, Anakin! I loved you!” Second, a Force dyad requires both the light and dark sides of the Force to be present in the relationship. Similar to Rey and Kylo Ren, Obi-Wan represented the light side of the Force, while Anakin had fallen to the dark side as Darth Vader.
In this way, Obi-Wan and Anakin could have formed a Force dyad, but Emperor Palpatine might not have noticed because the two never worked to develop their connection. Throughout the Star Wars sequel trilogy, Rey and Kylo Ren grew their bond both intentionally and unintentionally. During Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Rey, and Kylo Ren began talking with each other through the Force. They even discovered they could touch each other’s hands and transport physical objects, which they continued to do in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Additionally, it has been speculated (via Nerdist) that Kylo Ren accidentally strengthened their bond in Star Wars: The Force Awakens by trying to read Rey’s mind, which allowed them to enter each other’s memories. In contrast, Obi-Wan and Anakin became enemies when Anakin turned into Darth Vader, actively pushing each other away and weakening their bond. This means that although Obi-Wan Kenobi suggested that Obi-Wan and Anakin were a Force dyad, only Rey and Kylo Ren’s bond was strong enough for Emperor Palpatine to recognize their dyad.
