Which NBA Team Drafted Kermit Wilts At The End Of Hustle?
Kermit Wilts’ NBA future isn’t revealed in Hustle‘s ending, leaving viewers to wonder which basketball team drafted the young star. Adam Sandler’s Netflix movie makes a very conscious effort to portray the NBA landscape in as realistic of a way as possible. This meant putting real-life NBA players in Hustle‘s cast to recreate the professional sports league faithfully, even if the story centered around Bo Cruz (Juancho Hernangómez) is entirely fictional. His rival throughout the film, Anthony Edwards’ Kermit Wilts, also plays an important role and should have a bright NBA future ahead of him.
For most of Hustle‘s runtime, Bo Cruz is the underdog for the upcoming NBA Draft as an international prospect no one ever heard of before Stanley Sugerman (Adam Sandler) found him. Kermit Wilts is on the opposite end, as he’s a well-known draft prospect. The trash-talking, high-flying scorer is portrayed as the best young basketball player in the draft. Even though Bo gets the best of Kermit in the final game, Hustle‘s ending only shows that Bo Cruz got drafted by the Boston Celtics and makes no mention of what happened to Kermit Wilts.
Figuring out which NBA team drafted Kermit Wilts in Hustle‘s universe is a bit tricky to pin down. Based on the NBA rosters teased at the movie’s finale and the landscape of the league as a whole, it appears that Hustle takes place in a fictionalized version of 2021 and the leadup to the 2021 NBA Draft. The movie also presents Kermit Wilts as a top prospect, even though a player named Zeke Washington is mentioned as a lock to go first overall. All signs point to Kermit Wilts being a top-three NBA draft pick after Hustle‘s ending. In real life, the Detroit Pistons, Houston Rockets, and Cleveland Cavaliers had the top three spots and would be best positioned to draft Kermit.
One major caveat is that the Minnesota Timberwolves would likely be one of the league’s worst teams in 2021 thanks to Hustle. Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards plays Kermit Wilts, which means that the Minnesota franchise doesn’t have him yet. This creates a significant sliding doors moment for the NBA as a whole. The Timberwolves had the first overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, where they selected Edwards. With him not being available in Hustle, they could have James Wiseman or LaMelo Ball instead. There is no telling how good this version of the Timberwolves would have been. The real-life team with Edwards only lost its first-round pick in 2021 due to it not landing in the top three, but the Timberwolves could have kept their pick and drafted Anthony Edwards’ Kermit Wilts if the ping pong balls bounced a different way in Hustle‘s world.
Based on all of the ways Hustle‘s NBA differs from real life, there are plenty of options for who drafted Kermit Wilts. It will realistically take a sequel to answer the question concretely. For now, the best speculation points to the Timberwolves, Pistons, Rockets, or Cavaliers getting him. Considering Anthony Edwards plays on the Minnesota Timberwolves in real life, that is the best bet for where Kermit Wilts spends the beginning of his NBA career. After all, Bo Cruz landed on the Boston Celtics partially because that is where Hernangómez played in real life at the time, so Hustle would have likely gone a similar route to pair Edwards with his actual NBA team.
