33 “Heartstopper” Details That Are Small And Clever, But You Might’ve Missed Them The First Time
You have to notice the little lovebirds that follow Nick around.

? Warning: There are some spoilers ahead for Heartstopper! ?

1. The tree on the Truham school uniforms blooms throughout the series as the seasons change and romance blossoms.

Netflix

4. Charlie’s Insta bio is just an emoji of leaves, which is a reference to the iconic leaf doodles that appear throughout the series.

Netflix

5. The central colors that represent Nick and Charlie are yellow and blue, which show up together a lot throughout the series.

6. There’s a rainbow lens flare when Charlie first makes eye contact with Nick.

Netflix

7. And there’s another one after Charlie kisses Nick in the rain.

Netflix

8. There are two cartoon lovebirds hanging out in a tree behind Nick in Episode 5.

Netflix

9. Not only are there leaf doodles and lovebirds behind Nick and Charlie on the train in the last episode, but Heartstopper writer, Alice Oseman, is sitting across the aisle with a rainbow bag.

And if you’re wondering what they’re drawing:

Netflix

The first two heart/love emojis are from messaging Nick and his friends. The rainbow and rainbow flag are for his sexuality. The dog is Nellie (and in my heart ? is also for Nellie). The shameful sweating emoji represents him apologizing all the time, while the generic smiley is the one he uses when he pretends he’s okay. The film reel is for Tao. The trans flag is for Elle. The pink hearts, sparkles, and leaves are all signature Heartstopper doodles. You can also see the edge of a snowflake emoji for the snow day and the nerd emoji for Charlie being a “gay nerd.”

11. As Nick watches Tara and Darcy kiss at Harry’s party, the lights on his face flash blue, purple, and pink, which are the colors of the bisexual flag.

Netflix

12. The lighting in the bowling alley is also very bisexual.

Netflix

13. Nick’s frequently used emojis are mostly just a testament to how expressive he is.

Netflix

His faces in the comics are legendary. Also, baseball, I guess.

14. There’s a bulletin board full of gay activist Keith Haring’s art in the art classroom.

Netflix

15. Elle’s Sports Day makeup is little Heartstopper comic–style doodles.

Netflix

16. The rugby player who Harry insists has a thing for Charlie is the same one who later gives Charlie a bloody nose.

Netflix

Netflix

A crush, indeed.

17. There’s a sculpture of the Olympic rings made out of hearts at Sports Day.

Netflix

18. Tara and Darcy not only have sparks flying (just like Nick and Charlie) as they kiss in the music room, but also music notes.

Netflix

19. Nick has a mug with his initial on it in the same font as the Netflix logo.

Netflix

20. Tao’s blanket at the sleepover has leaves on it. (Okay, I’m done pointing out leaf motifs.)

Netflix

21. When Nick starts explaining bisexuality to his mom, she says she “wasn’t born in the 18th century.” Olivia Colman won an Oscar for her role in The Favourite, which is set during the 18th century.

Netflix

I would normally call this a coincidence, but the line in the comic is, “I wasn’t born in 1920.”

22. In the arcade, the doodles around Elle are pixelated like a video game, except for the ones reflected in her glasses.

Netflix

23. Charlie has a huge pile of different colored Converse in his closet even though he almost always just wears his dirty white pair.

Netflix

24. The Sports Day banner has Alice Oseman’s signature font and doodle style.

Netflix

25. The art room changes throughout the year as students create new projects.

A lot of the projects explore themes of growth and identity like eyes, doors, self-portraits, and plants.

The little recycled bottle cacti even “grow” paper flowers.

Netflix

26. Elle wears some outfits that are light blue, light pink, and white, like the trans flag.

Netflix

27. As butterflies start to metaphorically flutter between Elle and Tao during Sports Day, there’s literal butterfly art on the wall and in the doorway.

Netflix

Butterflies are also a symbol for the trans community.

28. The wave mural in the hallway is designed in Alice Oseman’s art style.

Netflix

The droplets flying off the waves even look like Alice’s leaves. Okay, now I’m done talking about leaves.

29. Elle’s landscape painting appears to be a river with trees along it, which resembles some of the places we’ve seen her spend time with Tao.

30. Elle’s phone case has heart doodles, and Nick’s has star doodles.

Netflix

31. According to the set decorator, Maxwell Fine, the merry-go-round ride was filled with crew members who, once they’d committed, had to keep riding over and over again until they got enough footage.

Netflix

32. Everyone’s bedrooms represent their personalities — Charlie’s room is cluttered, generally creative, and full of references to his favorite books and music.

Netflix

Nick’s room is neat and stereotypically masculine, Darcy’s room is total chaos, and Tara’s room is full of stuffed animals.

Netflix

Isaac’s room is full of books, Tao’s room is edgy and carefully curated, and Elle’s room is artsy and full of handmade decor.

Netflix

33. Finally, if you look reeeeeally closely, Charlie’s bookshelf has some of Alice Oseman’s other books on it.
