25 Highly-Rated, Beloved Movies People Claim Are Actually “Average” At Best
This post will make some people feel seen, and other people feel enraged.

Have you ever sat down to watch a movie it felt like every single person in your life ranted and raved about, only to find yourself thinking, “Um…this was fine? ‘Okay’ at best?”

Nickelodeon

Well, you’re not alone! Recently, in a viral thread, redditor u/SuggestionBusy7104 asked, “What movie has a high rating, but you think it’s average?” and, WHEW, did people come through with some controversial answers.

Fox

So, with that in mind, here are just a few of the most popular (and unpopular, if you catch my drift) responses shared:

EDITOR’S NOTE: These are inpidual opinions rounded up from different Reddit users within the same thread, and thus are not reflective of my own personal opinions or taste, so — quite literally — don’t shoot the messenger. I only agree with, like, three of these, tops (I’ll let y’all decide which three, LOL).

1. The Princess Bride (1987)

“Everyone I talk to LOVES it, but I can’t stand it! Honestly, it’s not funny and it’s annoying.”

“Basically, everyone tells me it’s one of the best comedies of all time, but I just didn’t enjoy it. I don’t care for zombie movies (but I still liked Zombieland, despite that bias). This movie just fell flat to me. I sat and watched it all the way through, and the only thing I can remember is the secondary protagonist being Shaun’s pet zombie at the end. I just recall everything else being ‘meh’ to me. I wouldn’t say it’s ‘bad,’ but it failed to live up to all the hype people were giving me about it being a masterpiece. I’d rate it as a ‘I can tolerate it if it’s on, but won’t ever go out of my way to rewatch it’ film.”

“It almost had me sleeping, and the characters often made confusingly stupid decisions.”

“I get why it’s a great movie, but I don’t know…I found the narration by Morgan Freeman jarring. I’ve watched it more than once — I really wanted to give it a go, as everyone loves it — but it’s not for me. I don’t really think it’s the critically-acclaimed must-watch for every movie lover people say it is.”

“It’s boring, and I don’t understand why people carry on about it like that. Citizen Kane is pretty boring, too, but at least with that one I can understand how it could have been exciting for audiences at the time. Casablanca, though…I don’t get it.”

“It’s not a bad film, but it beating Saving Private Ryan for Best Film at the Oscars is still mind-blowingly wrong.”

“I thought I was going crazy when this was released and had such a great reception. I really thought that it was OK at best, but it seemed so much like a cash-in to me. Me and my sister were making fun of so many parts in the movie.”

“It was originally a book and the book is fantastic, but it did not translate well to screen because the book relies on the main character not being able to see and trying to navigate the world to get to a safe place.”

“I repeat this bitching and moaning all the time, but this movie getting an Oscar for editing and Rami Malek’s acting was insane to me.”

“I thought the concept of an R-rated villain origin story was a cool idea, and, for the most part, I thought it was a fun movie, but by no means do I think they came anywhere near knocking it out of the park. It was fine.”

“I enjoyed the nostalgic parts of it because I’m old as fuck (hell yeah, Alfred Molina!), but, other than that it was, to me, very cheesy, campy, and too dependent on that fun nostalgia stuff. It was also kind of boring. I’ve never been big on most of the Marvel movies (except Iron Man because Robert Downey Jr. is fun to watch), so maybe I’m just not the target audience.”

“It stole the Best Picture and Best Director Oscars from There Will Be Blood and Paul Thomas Anderson, respectively, and I will never forgive them for it. This literally happened 14 years ago and I still fume over it weekly. It’s a decent movie, but I found There Will Be Blood to stand above it in every way.”
