Here’s Everything You Need To Know About The New Gay Rom-Com “My Fake Boyfriend”

My Fake Boyfriend, the new queer romantic comedy from BuzzFeed Studios, is out today on Prime Video! If you’re a lover of rom-coms, LGBTQ films, or both, here’s your handy guide to everything you need to know about My Fake Boyfriend — and be sure to check out this official trailer:

You might recognize some of My Fake Boyfriend’s fantastic cast, which features Keiynan Lonsdale from Love, Simon and The Flash; Dylan Sprouse of The Suite Life of Zack & Cody fame; and Sarah Hyland from Modern Family!

Lonsdale plays the unlucky-in-love Andrew, while Sprouse plays Andrew’s best friend and graphic designer extraordinaire, Jake! Jake pitches the idea of creating a fake boyfriend for Andrew on social media and uses his graphic design skills to help create “Cristiano,” the fake boyfriend in question, and make him look both insanely attractive and madly in love with Andrew. Hyland, meanwhile plays Kelly, another of Andrew’s friends, and Jake’s longtime girlfriend!

Lonsdale, Sprouse, and Hyland all have some truly amazing best friend chemistry together onscreen, and for the record, I’d like to make it clear that I’d love to be a part of this friend group IRL, please. Thank you.

Also, if you didn’t already know, fun fact: Keiynan Lonsdale is definitely a huge rom-com aficionado!

In a recent interview with BuzzFeed Australia, Lonsdale sat down to talk about My Fake Boyfriend (and give some dating advice to fans). In the interview, Lonsdale was asked what rom-com remake he would want to star in if he could do it with a queer cast, and he said 10 Things I Hate About You (which I would watch 100 times over)! It’s honestly great going into My Fake Boyfriend knowing that Lonsdale has exquisite taste when it comes to rom-coms.

My Fake Boyfriend also costars Samer Salem and Marcus Rosner, two familiar faces from the world of TV.

Rosner (whom you might recognize as Warren, one of the suitors from Season 3 of Unreal) plays Nico, Andrew’s horrible ex-boyfriend whom he repeatedly breaks up with, only to come crawling back every now and then. We’ve all been there! Luckily, Andrew eventually meets Rafi, a sweet and, frankly, unconscionably handsome chef played by Salem. Fans of The Expanse might recognize Salem from his role as Josep!

In addition, My Fake Boyfriend features a fan-favorite actor from Schitt’s Creek!

That’s right, Schitt’s Creek fans: Karen Robinson, aka Ronnie on Schitt’s Creek, is in My Fake Boyfriend! She plays Andrew’s lovable, if not occasionally overbearing, mother, who just wants to see Andrew settled with someone he loves. Robinson’s character, Lucille, is honestly such a great example of what a parent of a queer child should look like. More characters like Lucille, please!

The film is directed by acclaimed director Rose Troche and written by Luke Albright, Joe Wanjai Ross, and Greg Boaldin.

Best known for directing the pilot of The L Word, Troche is a celebrated director of both movies and TV shows. When she was announced to helm the film, Richard Alan Reid, senior vice president of global content and head of studio at BuzzFeed, said, “There is no better person to tell this queer love story than Rose Troche.” Given her wide variety of directorial credits and her dedication to telling authentic queer stories, it’s easy to see why Troche is quite literally the perfect choice to head up a film like My Fake Boyfriend!

And then there’s the writing team of Albright, Ross, and Boaldin. Ross and Albright have actually worked together previously on short films, and luckily (at least according to Ross’s Twitter), the pair seem to already be cooking up more rom-coms for us!

And, to be clear, you can never have too many queer rom-coms!

Also, quick BTS fun fact! Albright has said that he owes the film to “all the #crazy exes out there…”

Sure, maybe this fun fact is more of a joke than anything else, but on his Twitter, Albright credited/toasted “all the #crazy exes out there” for making My Fake Boyfriend possible. Whether this is 100% true or not, writing a whole movie about your crazy ex seems like the absolute best way to win a breakup! Let’s slow-clap it out for Albright!

Also, strangely enough, did you know the whole “fake boyfriend” thing isn’t that unheard of on social media?

That’s right! It may sound surprising, but apparently, it’s pretty commonplace to try to fake a significant other on social media! A story run by Cosmopolitan back in 2016 even detailed how to go about this process. And let me tell you, it is extensive and not for the faint of heart — a fact that Andrew learns the hard way throughout My Fake Boyfriend!

So, queer rom-com fans, that’s what you need to know about My Fake Boyfriend! It’s honestly such an endearing film with a ton of heart, and it has some of the funniest moments I’ve seen in a romantic comedy in recent memory. The best part is, it’s available on Prime Video in the US starting today.
