How Gorr Can Still Take His Comic Form In Thor: Love & Thunder
Based on the Necrosword’s power and a growing MCU trend, Gorr the God Butcher could transform to match his comic appearance in Thor: Love and Thunder.

How Gorr Can Still Take His Comic Form In Thor: Love & Thunder

Gorr the God Butcher looks different than expected in the trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder, but he could still change to match his comic form at some point during the MCU movie. The fourth Thor installment will follow the titular superhero’s journey to achieve inner peace after the events of Avengers: Endgame. However, this journey is complicated by the threat of Gorr, who aims to kill all gods because of their apathy toward other beings.

Although it’s exciting to see Gorr in the Thor: Love and Thunder trailer, there is understandable disappointment in the fact that he looks different in his MCU portrayal compared to his appearance in Marvel comics. With no prosthetics or computer-generated effects, Gorr has mostly human features in the movie. There are some similarities, such as Gorr’s black and white skin and yellow eyes, but he does not resemble humans in the comics. Born on a planet without a name, Gorr is a white alien with tentacles growing from his head and the absence of a nose.

Gorr may not maintain his human-like appearance throughout Thor: Love and Thunder, however. Due to exposure to his Necrosword, All-Black, he may transform to take his comic form. In Marvel comics, Necroswords are symbiotes that manifest as powerful weapons, capable of killing divine beings. Specifically, All-Black was forged in the corpse of a Celestial and drew energy from those whom it was used to kill. This allowed All-Black to give its wielder superhuman strength, speed, and durability along with supernatural powers like matter and energy manipulation. Due to extended use of the Necrosword, Gorr may slowly become more similar to his comic counterpart during Thor: Love and Thunder. Evidence for this includes Gorr spitting a black liquid during the Thor: Love and Thunder trailer and the MCU’s trend toward more comic-accurate costumes.

During one quick shot in the Thor: Love and Thunder trailer, Gorr spits out an unknown black liquid, which could be caused by his use of All-Black. As a symbiote, similar to the one that empowers Marvel’s Venom, Gorr’s Necrosword gave him some shapeshifting abilities. This allowed Gorr to grow more weapons from his body, all with the same inky, black look. Since Gorr seems to be painfully spitting up this substance, though, the MCU could be increasing All-Black’s effect on Gorr, altering his body due to prolonged exposure. In this way, Gorr could change to resemble his comic form as he slowly loses his humanity.

In addition, Gorr taking on his comic appearance before the end of Thor: Love and Thunder would fit the MCU’s growing trend to include comic-accurate costumes. In early MCU movies, many characters’ costumes were more practical in their live-action adaptations, featuring darker colors and less bold accessories. More recently though, MCU heroes have been donning their brightly colored suits and capes again. For example, Clint Barton and Kate Bishop both wore their classic purple outfits in Hawkeye, Wanda Maximoff wore her red headpiece for the first time in WandaVision, and Moon Knight switched between two of the titular hero’s comic-inspired costumes. Based on this trend and the Necrosword’s abilities in Marvel comics, it would make sense for Gorr the God Butcher to eventually transform into his comic appearance during Thor: Love and Thunder.
