15 Lines From “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” That Sum Up Each Character

Brooklyn Nine-Nine has given audiences some memorable characters throughout its eight seasons, and they all had a line that stuck in our minds all these years.

While it’s difficult to sum up all these characters with just one quote, these memorable lines still say a lot about who they are and why they’re so remarkable. Some side characters will be included on this list, as they’ve had just as big an impact as the main cast. With that in mind, these are the lines from Brooklyn Nine-Nine that sum up each character.

WARNING: MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD!

Jake Peralta: “Die Hard is the best cop movie of all time. One cop heroically saving the day while everyone else stands around and watches. It’s the story of my life.”

Fox / Via YouTube

Aside from cooking, accidental innuendos, and his wife and son, Boyle is all about being friends with Jake. Boyle’s entire identity has been all but consumed by his relationship with him, and he panics at the slightest chance of losing it. Though he has grown to be his own man throughout the series, he still obsesses over Jake to a genuinely concerning degree.

Rosa Diaz: “I’ve only had Arlo for a day and a half, but if anything happened to him, I’d kill everyone in this room and then myself.”

Fox / Via YouTube

Rosa has always been the scary and tough-as-nails detective everyone likes and fears. However, there are times when she displays the capacity to feel something besides anger. This was the case when she took care of a dog that Boyle refused to adopt, and she showed us that she could love something to the point that it hurts everyone.

And speaking of love…

Terry Jeffords: “Terry loves love.”

Fox / Via YouTube

Terry loves the simple things in life: yogurt, lavender, foreign films, and hedging. But most of all, Terry loves to love. Despite his Hulk-hard exterior, Terry is a sensitive man who cares deeply for his family and coworkers and will do anything to protect them. He is truly the gentle giant of the Nine-Nine.

Gina Linetti: “The English language cannot fully capture the depth and complexity of my thoughts, so I’m incorporating emojis into my speech to better express myself. Winky face.”

Fox / Via YouTube

The mind of Gina Linetti has been the fascinating source of such great bewilderment. The only thing she obsesses about more than herself is her phone, and this line sums up both of her greatest loves and the astounding way that her brain functions.

Raymond Holt: “Every time someone steps up and says who they are, the world becomes a better, more interesting place. So thank you.”

Fox / Via YouTube

As an LGBTQ+ person of color, Captain Raymond Holt has overcome so much discrimination in his years in the NYPD. Nevertheless, he always stands proud of who he is and is very supportive of his detectives when they do the same. While he may not be the most emotional person in the world, Holt has always been a nurturing father figure to almost everyone in his precinct.

Michael Hitchcock: “We’re a package deal. Everyone knows that.”

Fox / Via YouTube

Hitchcock and Scully are such close friends that they’re rarely seen apart on the show, and this line perfectly encapsulates their symbiotic relationship. They love to eat, sleep, and not do any police work, and they will piggyback off each other to achieve their leisurely goals.

Norm Scully: “I’ve been called the Leonardo da Vinci of sitting on my ass.”

Fox / Via YouTube

Scully has been sitting on the job for so long that he’s made it an art form. You’ll hardly ever see him and Hitchcock without a chair underneath them. This has become such a known fact that Rosa challenged the not-so-dynamic duo to sit in one the longest.

Kevin Cozner: “Better get some corticosteroids to treat that laryngeal fracture.”

Fox / Via YouTube

Like his husband, Raymond Holt, Kevin Cozner is a polite and quick-witted intellectual who doesn’t talk like the average person. So much so that this line is the best quip he could come up with for when he punches a crook’s throat. Even so, he’s still one of the coolest dads we’ve ever seen on television.

Doug Judy: “New York’s finest just got a whole lot finer.”

Fox / Via YouTube

You can’t help but love Doug Judy, aka Horatio Velveteen. Despite being a lying car thief, the Pontiac Bandit has a hilarious and magnetic charm that immediately made him a fan favorite, and you can thank Craig Robinson for elevating the character to cosmic heights. Any episode this man is in is an instant classic.

The Vulture: “Yo, is this a police station or a toilet? ‘Cause all I see is turds.”

Fox / Via YouTube

The Vulture has long been the bane of the Nine-Nine’s existence. He thinks that anyone unfortunate enough to meet his gaze is beneath him, and he mocks them all with the demeanor and the linguistic prowess of an arrogant frat boy. The show has introduced some insufferable characters, but the Vulture stands above them all as the absolute worst.

Madeline Wuntch: “Those are my tissues, Raymond. If you were planning on sneezing, you should have brought your own.”

Fox / Via YouTube

One of the most well-known relationships in the show is Holt’s long-lasting feud with Madeline Wuntch. Whenever they’re on-screen together, they both can’t help but try to insult and spite each other. The fact that Wuntch won’t even give Holt the courtesy of having a tissue shows how deep her hatred runs.

Adrian Pimento: “Great, who are we killing? I won’t do kids. That’s a rule. But that rule is negotiable if the kid’s a dick.”

Fox / Via YouTube

After years of working undercover in the mob, violence has become the one thing always on Pimento’s mind. Despite this, he remains one of the good guys and follows a moral code when dealing with criminals. But you do not want to mess with the guy who took down a bear by head-butting him in the privates.

Cheddar: “…”

Fox / Via YouTube

Of course, Cheddar doesn’t have any lines on the show because he’s just a dog. However, he doesn’t have to say anything to make us all love him. If the Nine-Nine were to have a mascot, this adorable corgi would undoubtedly be the animal they’d choose. Not sorry, Sergeant Peanut Butter.
