Avatar 2 Trailer Hints Jake Still Has A Na'vi/Human Problem To Overcome
Jake has adopted a human son in Avatar 2, leading to conflict between him and the Na'vi - even Neytiri - so will Jake choose his family or his clan?

Avatar: The Way of the Water‘s teaser trailer gives a look at how the world of Pandora has evolved since Avatar, hinting at a massive problem Jake Sully has to overcome. Now living life as a Na’vi, the former human has adopted a human child that goes by the name Spider, and this leads to conflict with some of the Na’vi, including his mate Neytiri. Because of this, Avatar 2 will likely be about Jake struggling to fix this problem, choosing between his life as a Na’vi and his roots as a human.

The first Avatar movie, released in 2009, follows humans from Earth as they attempt to colonize and mine Pandora, the home of the Na’vi. By the end of the story, Jake Sully chooses to permanently stay in his hybrid avatar Na’vi body, living life as part of Pandora’s Omaticaya clan. However, since the events of Avatar, humans have maintained a presence on Pandora, which will likely lead to further conflicts between the Na’vi, the humans, and Jake.

Avatar 2‘s trailer shows off Spider, a human child who has been adopted by Jake and Neytiri and lives among the Na’vi. However, the idea of taking in a human does not rest well with the tribe, as many Na’vi are wary of the humans that destroyed Pandora. Because of their distrust, Jake will seemingly have to choose between his son and his tribe against the backdrop of another war with the humans.

One of Jake’s biggest problems is that his own mate, Neytiri, struggles with parenting Spider. Jake and Neytiri’s human son would be hard enough if it was just the tribe that disapproved. Having Spider’s own mother be uncomfortable, however, is sure to put more pressure on Jake. On top of that, the couple has several Na’vi children, meaning that Spider will most likely face discrimination from his own siblings.

Another thing Jake will have to balance is his own human roots. The Na’vi have come to accept Jake due to his actions from the first Avatar, with most Na’vi thinking of Jake as one of their own. However, by defending Spider, the Na’vi may change how they view Jake, once again seeing him as just another human. The sequel will also feature more interactions with other Na’vi tribes, something that could be another problem for Sully. Avatar 2‘s trailer shows off green-skinned Na’vi, who could possibly come into conflict with the Omaticaya clan due to their choice to keep Spider and even Jake. If the Omaticaya clan thinks that they could be in danger because of their connection to the humans, they could cut off Spider and Jake in order to maintain peace, making Jake’s situation even worse.

Avatar 2‘s tagline is “this family is our fortress,” a theme that perfectly describes the conflicts that Jake, Neytiri, and Spider will go through in the movie. With troubles in Jake’s literal family and his Omaticaya family, he will surely have to make some tough decisions in order to save those he loves. Avatar: The Way of the Water has a lot going on, but the core of the story will be Jake’s human/Na’vi problem and his choice between his family and his clan.
